The font developed by Gyeonggi Province, the Gyeonggi Cheonnyeonche, won an award at Germany’s iF Design Award 2018, deemed the most prestigious of the world’s top three design awards, in the category of Communication (typography).

This represents a first among fonts developed by Korean municipalities although fonts designed by Korean companies including Hyundai Motor Company and KT have received this award in the past.

The iF International Forum Design is based in Hannover, Germany, and is the world’s oldest independent design body. It selects and presents iF Design Awards to outstanding design works each year.
With a history of 65 years, the iF Design Awards are regarded as the most reputable and authoritative of their kind. The iF logo is a worldwide symbol that assures excellent design.
This year, more than 6,400 entries from 54 countries competed for the awards.

The Gyeonggi Cheonnyeonche was well received by the 63 judges composed of experts from all around the world, expressing the elements of design that effectively reflect the characteristics of the region and the Korean people as well as universality.

The Gyeonggi Cheonnyeonche was designed with the concept of connection that implies the mediating characteristics of Gyeonggi Province that can be found in its 1000-year history since the naming of “Gyeonggi,” the geographical characteristics linking the east and the west of the Korean peninsula, and the open-mindedness and generosity of Gyeonggi residents. The concept of connection was reflected in the design elements such as the flexible connection of consonants and vowels and the end rise of the first and the final consonants.

An official of Gyeonggi Province said, “The Gyeonggi Cheonnyeonche has been recognized for its globally excellent design with this iF award. I hope that this will help promote the 1000-year history and values of Gyeonggi Province around the world and raise the pride of Gyeonggi residents in their culture.”

The Gyeonggi Cheonnyeonche can be downloaded free of charge from the Gyeonggi Provincial Government website without copyright restrictions, and its usage is expanding nationwide as it is also provided by Hancom Office under a contract between Gyeonggi Province and Hancom.
