The Nam June Paik Art Center restoration project, which began in 2001, still goes on today.Pioneering video artist and world-renowned modern artist Paik handwrote, ‘the house where Nam June Paik’s spirit is still alive’ on the blueprint of the museum. In this small house, you can truly feel the faith and philosophy on art of Paik who was pursuing human society and life without being confined by fame or reputation. Feel yourself the reality of Nam June Paik who opened a new epoch of artistic world.
The architectural design of Nam June Paik Art Center was recommended by Union of International Artists (UIA) at an international contest held in 2003 with around 430 participants. This is a joint design work of Kirsten Schemel, a young German architect who won the top prize at the contest, and Marina Stankovic from KSMS Schemel Stankovic Architects in Berline, Germany. The biggest feature of this art center is the multiple layers of mirrors. The art center is comprised of an exhibition area, a video repository and a multipurpose hall. Nam June Paik Art Center is built in an area of 5,600 sqm (60,300 sft) with three ground levels and two underground levels. It was unveiled to the public concurrently with a completion ceremony on April 30th, 2008.
