Deep Purple, a rose variety developed by the Gyeonggi-do
Agricultural Research and Extension Services (GARES), won the Presidential
Award at the 12th Korea Variety Awards hosted by the Korea Seed &
Variety Service (KSVS) on December 21.

Deep Purple
is a variety that features glamorous colors – including a mixture of pink
and dark pink in its petals – and no thorns on its stalks. It can be harvested at
least seven times per year under normal Korean environmental conditions, and it
offers a 10% greater yield compared to other rose varieties.

GARES
entered Deep Purple under the name ‘Feel Lip’ to KSVS in 2010 and launched it in Ecuador and Colombia as Deep
Purple the same year.

Since
its launch, 80,000 plants have been distributed in Korea while 3.13 million
plants have been distributed to 187 farms in nine countries including Ecuador,
Colombia, and Kenya.

Of particular
note, Deep Purple has garnered KRW 330 million in royalties this year, and has
seen a total accumulated amount of KRW 1.28 billion to date. Among the 10
exported varieties developed by GARES, it recorded the highest revenue.

Division
Head Phillippe Veys at Olij Rozen, who manages the overseas sales of rose
varieties developed by GARES, explained, “Deep Purple
has become a main variety in the international market. So popular, in fact, that
we had to limit sales volume to maintain market price.”

GARES
Director Kim Soon-jae said, “We plan to launch
outstanding and unique varieties compared to foreign breeds that are resilient
against disease.” Director Kim added, “We will do our best to increase our international market share of
2.8% to a minimum of 10% as soon as possible.”

The
Korea Variety Awards recognize outstanding plant varieties developed within the
past 10 years (15 years for fruit-bearing trees); the event is hosted by KSVS.

Apart from this most
recent award, Deep Purple won the Platinum Award at the 2012 Moscow Flower Show
in Russia, the Consumer Award at the 2014 Keukenhof Flower Show in the
Netherlands, and the Grand Prix at the 2015 International Flower Expo Tokyo in
Japan.
