○ Recycled waste vinyl generated in Gyeonggi Province to be supplied as standard storage bag for food waste
– Expected to fix the environmental issues, eliminate odor from food waste and annually recycle 30 tons of waste vinyl
– 6,700 containers to be distributed within September to 10 cities—Suwon, Yongin, Seongnam, Bucheon, Namyangju, Anyang, Siheung, Uijeongbu, Yangju and Gwacheon—that have expressed intentions to participate

Gyeonggi Province announced on the 14th that it will distribute standard food waste storage bags made from recycled waste vinyl to 10 cities and gun in September.

This project was promoted to not only solve environmental problems such as odor and deteriorated urban aesthetics caused by discharging food waste bags, but also achieve resource circulation by recycling waste vinyl.

In most areas concentrated with residential buildings such as multi-family residence and detached houses, food wastes are discharged in standard plastic garbage bags, and this often leads to damaged garbage bags because of cats, rats or cars, which subsequently generates severe odor or scattered food wastes. In addition, waste vinyl is one of the waste resources that is difficult to recycle due to poor product value and economic feasibility.

The containers supplied by Gyeonggi Province are installed in detached houses or villa-concentrated areas to prevent the aforementioned situation and serve to store standard food waste bags discharged from each household until they are collected.

These containers are made by melting waste vinyl to change its properties and then putting it into a mold. With a capacity of about 25 L, the container is 39 cm wide, 41 cm long and 40 cm high with a cover. The amount of waste vinyl that goes into the production of one container is 4.5 kg, which is equivalent to 1,500 ramen packaging.

Gyeonggi Province plans to produce 6,700 containers and distribute them in September to 10 cities, namely Suwon, Yongin, Seongnam, Bucheon, Namyangju, Anyang, Siheung, Uijeongbu, Yangju and Gwacheon. It is expected that a total of 30 tons of waste vinyl will be recycled.

Earlier in June last year, the province signed a business agreement with Korea Recycled Plastic Manufacturing Industry Cooperative to produce waste vinyl-based food waste garbage bags and carry out the production.

An official of Gyeonggi Provincial Government said, “We expect that this project will continue to improve not only the urban aesthetics, which has been a problem when discharging food waste garbage bags, but also the residents’ awareness in recycled products. We hope that this project serves as the basis to create demands for recycled products, and we will continue to strive to establish a resource-circulating society.”
