The ‘Gyeonggi Creation Center’ of the ‘Gyeonggi Cultural Foundation’ began an open studio event, ‘Samilyahwa (삼일야화)’, or ‘Three-day Story’ on August 23rd for three days running.

The resident artists of the center opened their personal studios to the public in this open studio event. This event was organized as a means to bring the artiststheir work closer to the public.

During the open studio event, visitors can appreciate art more closely than in ordinary exhibitions.

“This event was advertised as an art party,I imagined some sort of passive participation. There turned out to be a more active involvement allowing us to communicate directly with artists.”

“We plan to accommodate artists in other genres than just visual artists so that there are active exchanged between the artists of various fields.”

Article 2. Education to Prevent Excessive Smart Phone Use (0827_3)

Children in Korea are spending an increasingly large amount of time playing smart phone games, causing social concern.
Recognizing the problem, the ‘Gyeonggi Provincial Administration’ introduced an education program to prevent the compulsive use of the smart phones for gaming among children.

Smart phone games are very popular among children in Korea. Most of these games are highly addictive.
Two thirds of parents were reported to have had trouble with their children concerning the excessive use of their smart phones,most concerns were on the length of use.

“We intend to promote healthy smart phone use through this ‘Excessive Gaming Prevention Education Program’. Itrecommended to apply house rules to limit the use of smart phone especially during study in bed.”
Healthy games are beneficial for youths in their social life.
The ‘Gyeonggi Provincial Administration’ plans to expand this visiting education program to promote healthy gamesprevent the excessive use of smart phone games.

Article 3. Environment Improvement Project of Gyeonggi Province (0828_3)

The ‘Gyeonggi Provincial Administration’ has been implementing the ‘Environment Improvement Project’.

In another small manufacturing company, employees are busy working. Their work environment maybe idyllic but they are happy, because they have a comfortable home. Their dormitory has recently been refurbished with a new interior. Employees can now comfortably relax with colleagues in a homey atmosphere.

The ‘Environment Improvement Project’ of Gyeonggi Province for smallmedium enterprises received positive responsesthe companies benefited.
89.3% of the beneficiary companies were reported to have been satisfied with the results, with the highest satisfaction being with the improved working environment.

“The Environment Improvement Projectone of the most popular provincial projects among small businesses. We are planning to expand the project to 25 citiescounties next year.”
Next year, more small businesses will receive provincial support for the improvement of the working environmentemployee welfare.

Article 4. Disaster Prevention Corps of Volunteers (0826_1)

During this summer, the ‘Disaster Prevention Corps’, an autonomous groups of volunteers, did great work in helping people with preventive work against heat.
A GTV reporter followed them to view the work firsthand.

1) Greenhouses in Anseong
The temperature in this green houseapproaching 40 degrees. Itan extremely risky situation in which one can easily succumb to heatstroke. Nevertheless, farmers are braving the heat to tend the cabbage seedlings.
The members of the ‘Disaster Prevention Corps’ visit the farmers to give them ice wateradvise them on the prevention of heatstroke.

“I have no choice but to come in here, otherwise these seedlings will die of heat. Once I make sure that they are okay, I can relaxeven feel exhilarated.”
Workers at construction sites are also at risk of heat stroke.
3) Disaster Prevtion Corps Promote Heatstroke Prevention
The members of the ‘Disaster Prevention Corps’ have been promoting heatstroke prevention in 31 citiescounties of the province.

“Working during hours of higher risk must be avoided. These groups have been working with us to promote the prevention of heatstroke, visiting the places of high risk.”
Visits were also made to the homes of solitary seniors.

An interesting exhibition about fans recently opened in the ‘Gyeonggi Provincial Museum’. In Korea, folding fans were traditionally for the exclusive usegenteel men. Our reporter was at this exhibition, whichcalled ‘The Wind in 5 Colors’

This white feather fan was useda provincial governor in an ancient dynasty of Korea. Therealso one that was allegedly given to the founder of ‘Goryo (고려) Dynasty’the king of another dynasty.

“I was impressed that our ancestors treated fans with such high regards as to make them works of art with beautiful drawingseven embroideries.”
The folding fans were the symbol of statusmasculinity. The more ribs it had, the higher the status of its owner. Fans were frequently the gift objects givena king to his retainers. Some fans were only for ornamental purposeothers were added with a decorative case containing a silver knife. There are fans with interesting stories associated with them,for use in different occasions.

Paldeokseon (팔덕선), for instance, symbolizes the eight virtues. Fans were used for various purposes other than just blowing the air, such as shading, emergency seating,even as a make shift food tray.

Article 6. Public Viewing of Livestock Product Processing (0828_1)

A slaughterhouselivestock product processing plant in Gyeonggi Province opened its production sites to public viewing. This event was organizedthe ‘Gyeonggi Provincial Administration’ as part of its program for the promotion of the consumption of livestock products.

At this slaughterhouse, approximately 700 pigs are processed into pork of various parts.
Itthe site of the ‘Livestock Product Experience Program’ of Gyeonggi Province. Today’s visitors are schoolchildren, their parents,the school catering personnel.

After the viewing, the visitors participated in sausages making. They stuff the sausage skin with meat pastepoke each of them with a toothpick to allow oil to drain out during the cooking process.

4) Livestock Products Experience Program
This event was organizedthe ‘Gyeonggi Provincial Administration’ to promote the awareness of high quality meat,the consumption of the livestock products of the province.
5) Shin Byeong-ho / Gyeonggi Province Livestock Hygiene Team
“This program aims to promote the public recognition of the high standard with which livestock products are produced. We plan to expand the programincluding various experiencing events.”
Viewingparticipating in the production processes will help the public to recognize the safety of livestock products,will also help the livestock industry increase their sales.

Article 7. Dental Hospital to Open for People with Low Income (0829-2)

The ‘Gyeonggi Provincial Administration’ signed an agreement with private organizations for the establishment of a dental hospital exclusively for people in low income brackets.

This dental hospital will be establishedthe ‘Gyeonggi Provincial Government’ in cooperation with the ‘Diocese of Suwon’ (수원), the ‘Gyeonggi Provincial Medical Center’the ‘University of Suwon (수원).
2) Dental Hospital Opens in Gyeonggi Provincial Medical Center in March 2014
It will be built as part of the ‘Suwon Hospital of the Gyeonggi Provincial Medical Center’ in March next year. Its services will be provided to families in low income brackets at lower prices.

“There are many individuals who simply give up seeking treatment for fear of high cost. We decided to build this general dental hospital that will work under the spirit of humanity to allow those who are economically underprivileged to have the same dental health.”

The dental hospital building will be builtdonatedthe ‘Diocese of Suwon (수원)’, the provincial government will equip the hospital with the necessary equipment. ‘The University of Suwon’ will take over its operation.
