o Gyeonggi-do ARES introduces new rose and cactus strains at the 2004 Horticultural Crop Research Presentation 

Gyeonggi-do ARES (Director Jeon Se-chang) announced at the 2004 Horticultural Crop Research Presentation on November 16 that three new strains of rose bushes and ten of cactus have been developed for commercial farming next year. 

Researcher Lee Yeong-sun explained the background to selecting these three particular rose breeds for the province’s support business. Following its hybridization in 2000, variety ①KR00-54-64 was proven over a four-year study (between 2001 and 2004) to bear more flower buds with a greater number of petals than average rose bushes. 

Variety ②KR00-21-59 features strong flower stems and resistance against pests, as confirmed by studies during the same period, while ③KR00-54-83 was selected based on the flower’s superior color and shape. 

Researcher Lee Sang-deok from the Cactus Division gave a presentation on the ten new strains that were grafted between 1999 and 2001. Three new types of Hibotan, ④ red KY012601, ⑤ pink KY0155080, and ⑥ yellow KY20384, two strains of Chamaecereus silvestrii, ⑦ yellow KYCS011506 and ⑧yellow KYCS011393, a new Notocactus Scopa called ⑨KYNS010703, two breeds of Lobivia named ⑩KYLB9928-10 and ⑪KYL9968-1, and two strains of Euphorbia, ⑫KYEM2051-12 and ⑬KYEM20175-1, were all introduced to the public. 

The new strains will be named through the “On-job new breed development registration” process in early December, and will be offered to farms for commercialization next year.
