120 billion KRW to be invested from government/private sector to redevelop the region into a tourist attraction by 2014
Yeoninsan (Mountain) in Gapyeong (1,068m above sea level), known as the ‘Alps’ in Gyeonggi Province, will be redeveloped into a provincial park.
Gyeonggi Province announced on May 10 that a ground-breaking ceremony for Yeoninsan Park would be held on May 14 in Sungan-ri, Gapyong-eup.
Along with private sector, the provincial government will make a KRW 120 billion investment into the Yeoninsan Park project. The project will be completed in two phases- the first to be from 2007 to 2009, and the second phase from 2010 to 2014.
Initially, Gyeonggi Province will invest KRW 59.6 billion to establish a visitor center, accommodations and commercial facilities, and a wild flower theme park in the park complex area in Sungan-ri (7.3ha).
Additionally, it will organize a 132,000-square-meter visitor complex in the park facility area in Baekdun-ri (2.7ha). The complex will include a nature experience center, an ecosystem experience course, and a parking lot. Establishment of the park complex will be completed by 2009.
Once called Umokbong, the mountain is famous for its wonderful scenery at Yongchu Valley, and for large flower communities. A legend says that the marvelous scenery of the valley was created when a dragon flew up into the sky. The flower communities have large colonies of royal azalea, dog’s tooth violet, and cinque foil.
In particular, Ahopmajigigol, the wide basin near the top of the mountain, boasts beautiful full blossoms of royal azalea each May. Gyeonggi Province holds the Yeoninsan Wild Flower Festival every year.
Kim Yong-taek, manager of the Forestation team at the Livestock/Marine/Forestry Department in the second provincial office said “The Gyeonggi-Chuncheon train and the Seoul-Chuncheon highway will be opened in 2009 when the first phase of the project is completed. The train and highway will make access to Yeoninsan a lot easier. The new park complex is bound to become one of the most popular tourist attractions in Northern Gyeonggi Province, along with Myeongjisan Park and the forest parks in Chukryeongsan and Kalbongsan.”
