Integrated transfer discount between Gyeonggi Province and Seoul
No discount given to cash passengers
Distance and fare can be queried on the internet
An integrated public transport transfer system between Gyeonggi Province and Seoul takes effect on July 1st, and will dramatically reduce transportation costs for ordinary citizens. Here are some of the most frequently asked questions relating to the changes in the system:
Q: I usually don’t transfer busses, so often get off the bus without scanning my transportation card. Does this mean I have to pay the bus fare again when I get on another bus?
A: Under the new distance scale system, bus fare is calculated based on the total transport distance, and this is done when the passenger scans their transportation card, both when getting on and off. If a passenger does not scan their card when they get off the bus, it is impossible to determine the total distance, which makes it hard to charge the correct fare. In this situation, an additional KRW 700, which is the difference between the base fare of KRW 900 and KRW 1,600, the fare for the longest distance, will be charged to your card when you get off the next bus, in addition to the base fare for this bus. For example, if you transfer from a normal bus to a village bus (the base fare is KRW 700) and forget to scan your card when you get off the village bus, KRW 1,400 (base fare of KRW 700 and additional fare of KRW 700) will be charged. If you transfer from a normal bus to another normal bus or a subway (base fare is the same as KRW 900), KRW 1,600 will be charged for the entire trip. To accommodate the passengers while they get familiar with this new system, these additional charges will be suspended twice before they are enforced.
Q : What are the conditions for the transfer fare discount?
A : To enjoy the discounted bus fare, you must use the public transportation card. The discount will be applicable to all transfers within 30 minutes of getting off and scanning your card (1 hour from 9 pm until 7 am next morning), for up to 4 transfers. However, when you transfer to the same service route (the same bus number or same subway line), the discount is not applicable.
Q : Can I get the discount even if I use cash instead of the transport card?
A : Passengers using cash are not entitled to the transfer discount. This is because it is impossible to charge cash passengers the correct fare, as there is no way of determining the correct distance of travel. In addition, using the public transport card will save you KRW 100 when using the normal bus or subway, and up to KRW 100 when using the village bus when compared to cash. The only way to save is to use the transportation card.
Q : Can several people get on and transfer with one transport card?
A : Yes, this is possible, but only if you notify your bus driver of the number of passengers using the transport card when you get on and transfer, and do so before scanning your card. However, if the number of passengers transferring differs from the number of passengers getting on the first bus, the transfer discount is not applicable.
Q : It currently costs KRW 2,400 (KRW 900 + KRW 1,500) for me to travel from Godeung-dong, Suwon to Suwon Station by bus and to Seoul Station by subway. Under the integrated transfer discount system, how much will I pay?
A : The total distance is 42.3 Km (bus 0.8km and subway 41.5km) and the total cost is KRW 1,600 (KRW 900 + additional cost of KRW 700.) So, you will save KRW 800.
