Autumn Tour to Gapyeong

Reaching colorful autumn leaves by subway.

Visit Gapyeong, where beautiful autumn scenery awaits you.

(Gapyeong) Mountains and fields are already changing their garb to more colorful hues. If you hesitated to travel because of heavy traffic and large crowds, how about taking the subway for a pleasant autumn journey?

By subway, the cost of travel is cheaper, and you can enjoy colorful autumn leaves in Gapyeong County without worrying about heavy traffic.

Gapyeong is located very close to Seoul. It feels like an oxygen tank surrounded by beautiful rivers, streams and mountains in midst of the metropolitan area. It is often called the department store of travel because you can take advantage of hiking and camping experiences at your leisure.

Bonap Mountain (329.5m) restores energy through the autumn spirit

At Bonap Mountain, you can see the slowly flowing North Han River and the curves of the Gapyeong Stream, which seems to linger quietly, waiting to join with the North Han River on both sides. Here, there is the royal tomb of Armreung Tomb, mountain ridges, and a cave in the mountain.

In particular, Bonap Mountain is famous for its connections with the calligrapher Han ho (pen-name: Seokbong), along with Kim Jeong-hui (pen-name), who are considered two of the greatest calligraphers of the Joseon Dynasty. When Han Seok-bong was serving as Governor of Gapyeong County in 1599, the 32nd year of King Seonjo’s reign, he enjoyed Bonap Mountain very much. As the entire Bonap Mountain consists of one big rock, he named this mountain Seokbong (meaning ‘stone peak’) and he chose this as his pen name as well, according to a legend.

After 2 years, when he had to leave Gapyeong, he buried his favorite byeoru (ink stone) and treasures somewhere on Bonap Mountain, so the mountain was renamed Bonap (meaning returning treasures to nature), according to another legend.

Upon reaching the peak, you can see the North Han River, NamyiIsland and Jara Island as well as the downtown area of Gapyeong County, all in one view, resembling an oriental painting.

Transportation: Take the Gyeongchunseon Line, get off at Gapyeong Station, and walk for about one hour and 30 minutes to get to the peak of the mountain.
