(Published October 27, 2011)

– Tourist sites recommended by the Gyeonggi Tourism Organization.

Sometimes, people suddenly want to go somewhere. They want to do this when they have troubles in their relationships, job stress, anxiety about their future, and so on. However, not many people can leave by airplane. Even though you cannot accumulate mileage points, you can leave where you’re at by riding a bike. Bike riding is booming in its popularity. Bike roads are connecting every place across the nation. So, the first step in going on a bike trip is to select a good biking course. The following courses are three attractive new biking courses in Gyeonggi Province:

There is something new on the banks of the Gangcheonbo, Yeojubo, and Ipobo Biking Courses in Yeoju City, Gyeonggi Province. Bikers can appreciate some newly built structures while riding their bikes. The South Han River Biking Course, which runs between Namyangju and Yangpyeong, surprises cyclists. The Namyangju and Yangpyeong Course has some amazing things – the South Han River, Dumumeori, and the Dasan Historic Site. The Green Way in Siheung City is stunning. If you want to see the beauty of the west coast with its mud flats, the Green Way is a must.

Fascinated by new beauty – on the banks of Gangcheonbo, Yeojubo, and Ipobo.
The banks of Gangcheonbo, Yeojubo, and Ipobo were built as part of the government’s four-river development project, which aims to address water shortages, prevent floods, improve water quality, and provide leisure and sports spaces for people. Structures along these three reservoirs have their own unique characteristics and are attractive. Let’s ride a bike along the 24km course while looking at the structures and enjoying the wind from the river.

– Gangcheonbo Bank
Gangcheonbo Bank has 7 three-meter-high floodgates. The floodgates control the amount of water in the reservoir. Gongdogyo Bridge, which passes over the reservoir, incorporates Hwangpo Dotbae, which is a symbol of Yeoju.

– Yeojubo Bank
Yeojubo Bank has facilities that resemble a sundial and a water clock. The dammed pool for irrigation is 525 meters long. The reservoir has 12 floodgates, each of which is two or three meters in height. The floodgates are controlled through an oil pressure control system.
Address: 356-4, Wangdae-ri, Neungseo-myeon, Yeoju County, Gyeonggi Province

Tourist Attractions: Tombs of King Sejong and King Hyojong, Birthplace of Empress Myeongseong

-Ipobo Bank

Ipobo Bank incorporates characteristics of the bird of Yeoju County, which is a white heron that is taking flight for a better future. Ipobo is 501 meters in length, and the movable weir is 295m while the fixed weir is 296m. The movable weir has ascent/descent-type floodgates. It is possible to release water over and under the floodgates. When releasing water, sediment can also be ejected so as to maintain good water quality.

Harmony of Nature, History, and Culture1114200551.jpg Images– The Yangpyeong, South Han River Biking Course in Namyangju
The South Han River Biking Course was created on the base of demolished railroad and railroad bridge on the banks of the South Han River. This is a 26.8km course between Paldang Station of Namyangju and Yanggeundaegyo Bridge of Yangpyeong. Thanks to the opening of the South Han River Biking Course, the existing biking road from Seoul to Paldang Station has been extended to Yangpyeong.

The chief characteristic of the South Han River Course is the fact that bikers can enjoy cultural assets that are near the river (i.e., Paldang Lake, Dasan Historic Site and Dumulmeori, small stations, and North Han River Railroad Bridge). Of particular note is the North Han River Railroad Bridge, which was originally built in 1939 and restored in 1952. In addition, a wooden path was created on the bridge and tempered glass was installed in four spots. People can see the river water through the glass. Bongan Tunnel (261m) is automatically controlled with efficient illumination and sensors.

The tunnel commands a fine view at night and guarantees safe bike riding in the evening. This biking course of the Four-Rivers Development Project is a 63km-long section that runs from Paldang Station to Gangcheonbo of Yeoju.
Location: From Paldang Bridge in Nam Yangju to Yanggeun Bridge in Yangpyeong County, Gyeonggi Province

The Green Way in Siheung Promotes the Green Trend  1127626651.jpg Images

Gyeonggi Province formed the Green Way by utilizing farm roads along the banks of the Botong Stream and Janghyeon Stream, both of which pass through Siheung. The Green Way, which runs 7.5km in each direction, begins at Wolmigyo Bridge of Mulwang Reservoir and is connected to the Lotus Theme Park, Gwangokji, and the Gaetgol Biological Park. The Green Way has an eco-friendly space where people can experience nature and appreciate the natural scenes of a farming community. An attractive fact about the Green Way is that the course includes popular tourist attractions in Siheung such as the Mulwang Reservoir. The Lotus Theme Park, Gwangokji, and Gaetgol Biological Park have convenient facilities such as parking lots, bike depositories, and restrooms.

If cyclists want to travel farther, they can go to Wolgot Port, Okgu Park, and Oido Island from Gaetgol Biological Park. In particular, the Okgu Park area has almost perfect biking roads. At Okgujeong Pavilion, visitors can see various beautiful scenes.

The distance between Gaetgol Biological Park and Okgu Park is about 13 km. It is 3km from the park to Oido Island. Gyeonggi Province is planning to complete a biking road that connects Gaetgol Biological Park, Oido Island, and Daebu Island in the future.
