DMZ, which represented the symbol of division and the pain of the nation before, is now becoming the symbol of coexistence, peace, and life by healing the wounds of the past 60 years.
Marking the 60th anniversary of Korean War Armistice, Gyeonggi Province will hold various peace events before and after July 27, which is Korean War Armistice Day, so that the nation can relive pains of the war and the division, and communicate each other and find harmony.
Under the theme, “From Armistice to Co-existence and Co-prosperity,” DMZ International Symposium will be held at KINTEX on July 23 to discuss co-existence and co-prosperity of the Korean peninsula, measures for reconciliation and cooperation between the two Koreas, and peaceful utilization of DMZ.
In addition, ‘War Veterans Invitation Event’ will be held on July 25 to 30 to visit national security sites in Korea with participation of 96 Korean war veterans and their families from the US, Turkey, Thailand, Canada, and Australia.
Camp Greaves Security Experience Facility, which was remodeled place as a part of Camp Greaves, the military facilities within Civilian Access Control Line (CACL) in Gunnae-myeon, Paju City will have an opening ceremony on July 27, and a visitors-participating large-scale Cheonjijindong Festival on the same day at 6:30 p.m. in Pyeonghwanuri.
The 60th year celebration of Daeseongdong Village, which was designated as “a village of peace” on August 3 in the same year of the Armistice Agreement (1953) and is the only village in South Korea located in Joint Security Area (JSA) within DMZ, will be taken place on August 2. On the next day (August 3), DMZ World Peace Concert will be held for declaring DMZ as a mecca of world peace.
On August 14, Tongil-chon, which was set up as a settlement village in the spring of 1972 in Baekyeon-ri, Gunnae-myeon, Paju city and now widely-known as Jandankong Village, and Civilian Control Line (CCL) lies therein, will open a ceremony of brand village. On October 6, Peaceful Unification Marathon Festival, in which nearly 10,000 participants run the CCL district in the hope of peaceful unification, will be the grand finale of a series of DMZ 60th year events.
