For one year from April to next March, a hotel VAT refund system will be implemented for foreigners using hotels in Gyeonggi Province.
Foreign tourists who stay at designated tourist hotels for a period of 2 to 30 nights are eligible to receive the refund. In order to receive a VAT refund, one can visit the refund windows (Global Tax Free, KTis) at the departure gates in international airports and ports after receiving a confirmation of lodging service from the hotel.
To date, 19 hotels have been designated for the VAT refund in Gyeonggi Province, including the Hotel Regency Suwon and KwangMyong Hotel. Out of 99 tourist hotels in the province, the number designated accounts for 19% compared to 13% nationwide. The province points out that the participation rate is low due to the early stage of implementation as well as the burden of disclosing room costs.
To encourage more hotels to participate in the hotel VAT refund system, the province organized a meeting of senior city and county tourism officials on April 9 at the provincial government complex.
“The success of the VAT refund system depends on the participation of the hotel industry,” said Park Deok-jin, Director of Gyeonggi Province’s Tourism Division. “Thus senior public officials from the tourism divisions of cities and counties within the province will personally visit each hotel to provide guidance so as to increase participation.”
