The Surisan Mountain royal azaleas at Chukryongsan Recreation Forest, which is considered the best habitat for wild royal azaleas in the metropolitan area, are expected to bloom ten days earlier than usual.
According to the Gyeonggi-do Forest Environment Research Institute, the flowers fully bloom around May 15 to 20 in the average year. However, due to the warm spring weather this year, the blooming period is expected to occur 10 days earlier than usual.
To promote the beauty of wild Surisan Mountain royal azaleas, the institute will provide optimal forest culture and leisure services to visitors including forest experiences, free medical checkups and royal azalea concerts.
The royal azaleas bloom along a ridge on 832 meter-high Surisan Mountain, forming a light pink tunnel with 20 to 50 year-old, 3 to 4 meter-high trees and offering unique pleasures to visitors.
It takes about 3.5 hours to walk a 7 kilometer-long course to enjoy the royal azaleas along the Surisan Mountain trail. (Course: Parking Lot 2 → Administrative office→ Hwachaebong Samgwori→ Royal Azalea Hill→ Top of Surisan Mountain→ Eoksaebat Samgeori→ Observatory→ Lawn Plaza→ Imdo Samgeori→ Wooden Bridge 2→ Parking Lot 2)
Moreover, the institute will assign two forest guides to introduce the flowers and trees of Chukryongsan Mountain to the visitors, and it will also host a photo exhibition of over 30 types of wildflowers including royal azaleas and bleeding hearts.
“There are a total of 12 trails within the Recreation Forest and all of them return back to the starting point (parking lot), so it’s convenient and suitable for a one-day hiking course,” said an official at the institute. “We expect over 50,000 visitors will come to Surisan Mountain during the blooming season.” Contact) 031-592-0681
