Together with the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA), the Gyeonggi Human Resource Development Center held a workshop on ‘the processes of economic and social development’ from November 11 to 17 for 13 high-ranking public officials from Peru.
Prepared for the Peruvian government officials, the workshop on the advanced economic and social systems of Korea consisted of lectures on Korea’s anti-corruption strategies and administrative reforms, economic development experiences, human resource development strategies, and innovative leadership in national development, as well as site visits to Korean companies including Samsung Electronics.
A representative of the center explained that the workshop is organized so that participants can learn how the economic and social development systems of Korea operate and consider ways in which to actually apply that knowledge in their own countries.
Peru, where the renowned Inca Empire flourished, is one of the leading tourist destinations in South America in which Inca civilization and its gorgeous culture can be experienced. As a travel program that recently aired on the topic of Peru has gained great popularity in Korea, interest in and travel to Peru has exploded.
Korea and Peru established diplomatic ties in 1963. With the ratification of the Korea-Peru FTA in August 2011, trade between the two nations has grown significantly. According to the 2014 national competitiveness rankings published by the World Economic Forum, Peru ranks 61st out of 148 nations and recorded an economic growth rate of 5.7%, the second-highest in Latin America.
Gyeonggi Human Resource Development Center Director Park In-su said, “I hope that, through this workshop, our experience serves as a stepping stone for the Peruvian government in fostering economic and social development. I also hope that this workshop provides an opportunity to further promote amicable cooperation between the two nations and to raise the status of Gyeonggi Province and Korea in global society.”
Since 2010, the Gyeonggi Human Resource Development Center has operated training programs for public officials from developing countries including Afghanistan and Jordan with the aim to help them achieve development and strengthen their capabilities. The center has operated a total of five workshops this year for public officials from Peru, Afghanistan, the KRG of Iraq, Bhutan, and other countries.
