Governor Nam Kyung-pil returned from a two-day mission to Guangdong Province, China, on December 7 with successful outcomes in local diplomacy.

Governor Nam participated in the IEF opening ceremony on December 5, as well as the 1st Korea China Creative Culture Industry Forum on December 6. He discussed diverse issues including the establishment of a Gyeonggi Province Day in Guangdong, homestay exchanges for youths, and the difficulties faced by Korean companies in China during meetings with Guangdong Party Secretary Hu Chunhua and Governor Zhu Xiaodan.

Of particular note, Governor Nam had a one-hour meeting with one of the Chinese Communist Party’s rising stars, Hu Chunhua, Party Secretary of Guangdong Province, and discussed economic and cultural exchange matters such as Pangyo Techno Valley.

Party Secretary Hu was initially unavailable for the meeting due to a trip to Beijing, but rearranged his schedule to meet with Governor Nam.

“When we met in March, I told you I hoped to meet with you again after your election success. I welcome you again and congratulate on your election,” Secretary Hu said. He added, “I flew for 5 hours from Beijing. No matter our position, please let’s keep our close relations. The key to improving friendship between countries is friendship between people”.

Governor Nam said, “I think I was successful thanks to your good wishes. Thank you for warm hospitality and welcome”.

The two politicians were on the same page regarding the notion that the status of Gyeonggi and Guangdong was like that of a ‘sandwich’ between advanced and developing countries.

In this context, officials from Guangdong Province will visit Gyeonggi Province to share know-how in the development of small and medium cities and boosting knowledge industry clusters, including Pangyo Techno Valley, so to enhance cooperation between the two regions. The two local governments will start working sessions beginning from next year.

Governor Nam also met Guangdong Province Governor Zhu Xiaodan on December 5 for discussions on the difficulties faced Korean SMEs in China. They also discussed measures for economic and cultural exchanges at the request of Governor Zhu.

Governor Nam then participated in the opening ceremony for the IEF 2014 Guangzhou Movement co-hosted by the International Exchange Association, the Korea Creative Content Agency, and the Guangdong Provincial Government, and sponsored by the Korean Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism.

In his congratulatory remarks, Governor Nam said, “The IEF has begun to enhance exchange and friendship between the youths of Korea and China. Now the forum has become a festival for youths around the world beyond Korea and China, as well as a place for cultural exchange”. He added, “I will endeavor to promote cultural digital contents initiatives as well as cultural exchange between Korea and China.”

Governor Nam attended the 1st Korea China Creative Culture Industry Forum hosted by the International Exchange Association in Guangzhou City, Guangdong Province, on December 6.

Governor Nam Kyung-pil, co-chair of the International Exchange Association, said, “As a result of the Korea-China FTA, trade between our two counties will expand from manufacturing to the service and creative cultural industries.” He continued, “Gyeonggi and Guangdong, both representatives of their respective national economies, should pursue mutual growth. I hope this forum will serve as a meaningful event for future success.”
