The 17th IFOAM Organic World Congress (OWC), referred to as the Olympics of organic farmers, will be held in Yangpyeong County and Paldang from September 26 to October 5.

This, the first OWC hosted in Asia, will take place under the 2011 slogan of “Organic for Life.” Over 2,200 organic farmers and scholars from around the world will gather together to improve global standards for organic farming.

The event will be divided into the Preliminary Conference, the organic farming symposium’s Main Conference, and the IFOAM General Meeting, during which the next host will be elected. Visitors will have the opportunity to see a broad range of organic produce from local and overseas markets during the Organic Exhibition, Organic Tour, and other special events.

The Organic Culture Parade will be held in Yangpyeong County, a region well known for organic food production.

The actual event period (September 26th to 27th) will see conferences on special topics in Uljin, Jeju and Namyangju. Yangpyeong’s Agricultural Technology Center will host a symposium on organic wines with specialists, manufacturers, and organizations participating in the event. Those who attend the event will also be able to take part in a bio-tour of Semiwon, Hwajeon-ri, Ogawon, and Dumulmeori.

From September 30 to October 1, the 12th Korea-China-Japan Environmental Rice Farming Technology Exchange will take place at Kobaco’s training institute for the sharing of information on eco-friendly agriculture, its future direction, and research results pertaining to living organisms in rice patties.

The 2011 Yangpyeong Organic Culture Parade will be held at the Semiwon and Yangseo Culture and Sports Park between September 28 and October 5.

In the morning of October 2, there will be a competition among rice cake makers and home-brewers at the 5th National Rice Cake Master and Home Brewer Contest, where Gyeonggi rice and processed foods will also be on display. All ingredients used during the competition will originate from Gyeonggi Province.

On the afternoon of the same day there will be a fashion show featuring apparel made of organic fabrics. The event’s goal is to boost interest in organic fabrics and present entertainment to raise public awareness of organic produce. Music concerts and cultural performances will also be staged to attract more viewers.

The Organic Art Fair Exhibition will be held at Semiwon and the OWC from September 28 to October 5. The event will display artwork from a select number of artists based on organic themes. For three days from October 3, the Yangseo Culture and Sports Park will be the site of a farmer’s market directly connecting producers and consumers.

A Yangpyeong County official stated that: “This OWC will be the first of its kind in Asia. We see this as an opportunity to promote Yangpyeong County and Korea. We want to make our status as an organic center clear by letting the world know what we do best.”

He added, “Yangpyeong Hanwha Resort has been selected as a supporting hotel for the OWC. There will be plenty of local and overseas visitors in Yangpyeong during the event. We hope this will stimulate the local economy.”

The IFOAM OWC is held once every three years and is hosted by different countries worldwide. It includes organic symposia, conferences for discussing the future of organic farming, organic fairs, supporting events, and the IFOAM general meeting. It is the preeminent event in the field of organic farming.
