We can see flowers in all seasons, but it is in spring is when flowers are most welcomed. The flowers blooming on trees and plants after the long cold winter, imbuing the mountains and hills with white, yellow, and pink, are a sign of spring and a source of happiness. The following are among the best spring flower festivals in Gyeonggi Province to visit in April.

□ Icheon Baeksa Sansuyu Blossom Festival

Cornelian cherry trees bloom faster than azaleas and forsythias because they are more resistant to cold. That is why Cornelian cherry flowers are known as the true forerunner of spring. Cornelian cherry trees that offer a gracious but vigorous impression put forth splendid golden blossoms in early spring. Thus, indulgence in the scent of Cornelian cherry flowers is an ideal way to enjoy the mood of early spring. There is a natural habitat for Cornelian cherry trees over 100 years old in Baeksa-myeon of Icheon City. This habitat extends along the road to Yeongwonsa Temple nestled in the ridges of Wonjeoksan Mountain (634m), the highest mountain in Icheon; the road itself connects Songmal-ri with Dorip-ri and Gyeongsa-ri. Visitors can also enjoy a variety of refreshments such as tea, sweets, and breads made with cornelian cherries at the venue of the festival that is held in early April each year.

One hundred and fifty thousand azalea trees imbue the ridges of Bucheon’s Wonmisan Mountain with pink. Along with the Ganghwado Goryeosan Azalea Festival, the Bucheon Wonmisan Azalea Festival held in early April is one of the two largest azalea festivals in the Korean Capital Area. During the festival, there are also a variety of performances offered by municipal choirs, traditional percussion bands, B-boy groups, and local residents. Bucheon is famous not only for the azaleas of Wonmisan Mountain, but also for the cherry blossoms of Dodangsan Mountain and the peach blossoms of Chundeoksan Mountain. Azaleas, cherry blossoms, and peach blossoms are referred to as Bucheon’s “spring flower trio”. The three spring flower festivals take place in the city from early to mid-April each year, which is the blooming season of these spring flowers.

Of particular note, the hill was chosen by the Korea Tourism Organization last year as one of the “Best Springtime Destinations”. When the azaleas are in full bloom, festivals are held around the Royal Azalea Hill and the Royal Azalea Park.
