Introduction

Godalsa Temple was built during the 23rd year (764 AD) of King Gyeongdeok during the Silla Dynasty. Also called Godalwon, it is one of the three famous temples including Dobongwon and Huiyangwon. Godalwon is a great Buddhist temple that is currently managed by the government, and during the Silla Dynasty, was under the protection of the king. National Treasures No. 4 (the Godalsaji Saji Temple Site Sari Pagoda budo), Treasures No. 6, 7, and 8 can be found here in all their unaffected grandeur. The temple was more grandiose in size when it was first built, and it is presumed that perhaps the entire Sanggyo-ri village was in someway employed at the temple. Today, only the remains of the once magnificent temple are present. The temple is buried under untended weeds and officials are currently working to restore the temple.
