Introduction

This house is located at the site having a view of Hangang River.

With a mountain at the back of it, it faces to the south direction.

It’s believed to be built in 1860s by Jo Seoku, who was a minister during the reign of King Gojong.

Anchae (quarter for women), Sarangchae(quarter for men), an extra small Sarangchae, and a shed form ㅁ-shape.

And the gate is said to be originally located at the “outer house’ for the servants, which has been collapsed already. ㅡ-shaped Sarangchae (quarter for men) is located to the right of Jungdaemun(middle gate), which leads to the back yard, and when you get to the yard, you will see the ㄷ-shaped Anchae with a main room and a hall, etc.

A kitchen is located with the left of the main room and storage of foods, a pantry, and a floor are located in a sequence to the kitchen.

To the right of the hall, a living room, an “opposite room,” and a kitchen are located and two rooms and another small Sarangchae is located beside the kitchen.

The small Sarangchae, which is rare, is one of the features of this house. Sarangchae, composed with a “big” Sarangbang, a “big” living room, an ordinary Sarangbang and the back living room in a line, has a long veranda.

And in front of the “big” Sarangbang, a lofty living room is installed toward the yard.

At the back yard of the yard the quarter for sheds forms a line.

The folding doors at the main room, the hall, a room for men, and the hall for men was installed to make the rooms cool in the Summer.

There’s a flower bed at the center of the back yard, and some trees makes a boundary between Sarangchae and Anchae. It’s unfortunate that the Haengnangchae (quarter for servants) in the shape of ㅡ no longer remains.

However, it’s still an excellent house with the feature of the house style of high ranked official.

It’s also remarkable that such a house, the exact construction date of which is proven and which was built by a well-trained carpenter, is located in the small village of Yeoju.
