Gyeonggi Province surrounds Seoul, the capital of the Republic of Korea. Approximately 24 million people live in Seoul and Gyeonggi Province, accounting for almost half of the total population of Korea., Over 13 million people live in the urban areas of Gyeonggi Province alone as of 2017, making it the most populous local autonomy in Korea.
