Greetings, everyone, and thank you for joining us for this week’s edition of GTV.
I’m Don Valiant and this is the news from Gyeonggi Province this week.

Article1.Gyeonggi to Expand Green Bean FarmingAreas (160920-3)
[Anchor’s Headline]Gyeonggi Province announced the expansion of green bean farming areas designated in a number of locations in the province. Thisdecision came after the positive sales results of green beans harvested from previously designated areas.

▶Green Bean Processing Enterprise, Osan City
Theyear-on-year sales of this green bean-processing enterprise have more than doubled since it began producing roasted green beans. This is attributed to consumers being impressed by the taste of roasted green beans and spreading the word.
▶Demand Soars While Supply is Limited
Demand for green beans has soared and the possibilitiesforprocessed green bean product developmenthave suddenly opened up.

▶Gyeonggi to Increase Green Bean Farming Areas
Green beans are nuttier in taste and have a more appetizing color than soy beans or black beans.
[CG]Besides tastiness and a commercially viable appearance, green beans are beneficial for women and have anti-aging effects since they contain large amounts of vitamin E.
Gyeonggi Provinceplans to increase the designatedgreen bean farming areasfrom the existing 4 hectares to 10 hectares by expanding three current areas.
▶Green Bean Production to Increase Five-folds
Annual green bean production will then increase from 4 tons to 20 tons.

“We will increase green bean farming area designations and provide technical support so as to ensure a stable supply of green beans as a raw material from next year.”
The designated green bean farming areas are currently located in Yeoncheon (연천) County and the cities of Paju (파주) and Yongin (용인).

Article2.Goyang City’s IlsanDistrictDevelopment Accelerates (160921-1)
[Anchor’s Headline]Gyeonggi Province’s development plans for the Contents Valley and the North Gyeonggi Techno Valley, both in Ilsan (일산) District of Goyang (고양) City, hadbeen delayed due to differences amongthe hosting organizations. However,high expectations were revived when these organizations recently reached an agreement for joint development.

▶Ilsan Abounds with large-scale Development
Ilsanis already the host of Korea’s largest exhibition complex, KINTEX, and the Korean Wave cultural complex, Hallyu(한류) World.
▶Accommodation Facilities and Commercial Areas Filled to Capacity
With these developments, hotels, apartments and buildings for amenities in the area are already filled to capacity

“We receive many enquiries from potential real estate investors since the announcement of Hallyu World and the North Gyeonggi Techno Valley projects. The commercial and accommodation facilitymarkets here are brisk.”
[CG]In addition to these provinciallyinitiated projects, Ilsan (일산) was also designated by the Korean government as the host of the Happy Housingproject that will accommodate 5,500 households.
▶Self-sustaining City Complete with Cultural and ResidentialAreas
When the Contents Valley and the North Gyeonggi Techno Valley projects are completed,Ilsan (일산) will reborn as a self-sustaining city complete with cultural and residential areas.

Ilsan New Growth Base Joint Development Agreement
The joint development agreement was signed by five public bodies including Gyeonggi Province, Goyang (고양) City, and related Korean ministry and public organizations.

▶Differences to be Resolved through Formation of Consultative Group
Differences among the organizations will be resolved bythe formation of a consultative group of related officials.

Article3.GyeonggiAnnounces ‘Alps Project’ to Reduce Microdust (160922-1)
[Anchor’s Headline]On September 23, Gyeonggi Provinceannounced a project that aims to reduce atmospheric microdust to one third of current levels by the year 2020. This project includes a number of strategiesfor the reduction of microdust emissions as well as for the prevention of the atmospheric influx of microdustinto the province.

▶Gyeonggi Provincial Government Complex (September 21)
Announcement of ‘Alps Project’for Microdust Reduction
Titled the‘Alps Project’, this 4-year plan targets the reduction of annual microdust emissions from the 4,400 tons of last year to less than one third of that amount through multifaceted efforts by the end of 2020.
▶Precipitation Enhancement (Artificial Rain)
One strategyof this projectis attracting attention forits ambitious concept. It is a combination ofartificial rainand microdust-free zone designation. If successful, it will work by inducing rainfall in designated zonesthat willcleanse those zones ofatmospheric microdust. These zones will be strategically selected so as to effectively block microdust before it reaches the province.

“The rain drops of will collide with microdust particles and precipitate with them. If we can induce rain that continues a whole day, 50 to 60 percent of atmospheric microdust will be removed…”

▶ Reduction ofIndustrial Microdust Emissions through Facility Improvement
In order to reduce industrial microdust emissions, a primary cause of the presence of microdust in Seoul and Gyeonggi areas, Gyeonggi Province will help replace 1,200 air pollution prevention facilities and install new facilities at additional microdust-generation sites.
▶100% Cost Support for Replacement of Diesel Particulate Filters
The current rate of diesel particulate filter replacement cost support will be increased from 90 percent to 100 percent.
▶50,000 Electric Vehicles and Air Purifiers at Bus Stops
Gyeonggi Province will also increase the number of electric vehicles to 50,000 and install air purifiers at bus stops in areas with high concentrations of atmospheric microdust.

Other sub-plans of the Alps Projectinclude the installation of additional microdust measurement stations and the procurement of 100 new road cleaning vehicles with high-pressure water spray tems. 
Article4.83-Year-Old Mom Cares for Daughterwith Alzheimer’s(160922-2)
[Anchor’s Headline]On September 21, World Alzheimer`s Day, Gyeonggi Province held an event to raise public awareness about Alzheimer’s and dementia, and to convey messages of support to dementia patients and their families. During the event, the story of an 83-year-old woman who cares for her daughter with Alzheimer`sbroke the hearts of audience members.

Every morning, Park (박순례) prepares and leaves home with her daughter,holding her hand as they go to visit a local dementia support center. Although her daughter is over 60 years old, Parkhas never taken her eyes off of her for the past several years.

“The news was like a bomb. I felt as if the ground had suddenly disappeared, as if my life was over. I took her to every hospital I knew…”
When Park herself became helpless in the darkest despair after years of tending her daughter on her own, Gyeonggi Province’s dementia support center and its programs were like saviors and helped return smiles to the faces of her and her daughter.

Concert for Dementia Patients
Gyeonggi Provinceoperates various support programs for dementia patients through provincial and local dementia support centers.
This year, Gyeonggi Province declared an Alzheimer’s Weekto follow World Alzheimer’s Day and organized various events to promote the prevention of and awareness about dementia during that week.

▶640,000 Dementia Patients in Korea, 1 in Every 10 Seniors
As of last year, there were 640,000 dementia patients in Korea, which equates to one in every ten seniors.
▶Gyeonggi Provinceto Expand Dementia Support Programs
In order to help the ever-increasing number of dementia patients, Gyeonggi Province will introduce expanded support programs such as free diagnosis services and dementia prevention education.

Article5.Korean Bulgarian Professor Meets Half-sister after 55 Years (160920-1)
[Anchor’s Headline]A Bulgarian professor who was born to a North Korean father and Bulgarian mother visited South Korea and, after 55 years of searching for his roots, met his half-sister who was born to the same father and defected to South Korea.

Arranged by Gyeonggi Province, their first dramatic meeting took place atIncheon International Airport.

As soon as Professor Nam saw his half-sister Yul-ju (율주), he embraced her tightly.

Therewasa subtle resemblance between these two unlikely siblings.
▶Nam Born During His Father’s Stay in Bulgaria As Student
KamenNam was born in Bulgaria where his father lived as a foreign student from North Korea.
▶Father Returned to North Korea,Leaving Wife and Son
Two years after his birth, Kamen’s father returned to North Korea where he became a professor.
▶Mother and Son Visited North Korea and Forced to Return to Bulgaria
Kamen’s mother later managed to get a job at the Bulgarian embassy in North Korea, and was able to reunite with her husband. However, she and her son were forced to return home by the Bulgarian government after only a short period of time. Kamen’s father later remarried and fathered Yul-ju (율주).

▶Kamen Nam Visited Memorial Sites
It was incrediblefor Kamento reunite with his half-sister in South Korea. This was also true for his half-sister who would never have been able to see her brother had she not defected to South Korea. During his 7-day stay in Korea, they visited their ancestor’s grave and the Korean DemilitarizedZone, the nearest point to North Korea, symbolizingtheir roots.

[Anchor’s Headline]There is a Korean indigenous freshwater fish showtouringGyeonggi Province as an accompanying event to local festivals. Our reporter visited thisshow at the Gwacheon (과천) Flower Show venue.

▶Indigenous Fish Show Held at Local Festival Sites
Located centrally among flower show booths, this fish show is attracting the attention of many young visitors. The show features a variety of species, some of which can only been found in the cleanest waters of pollution-free streams.

“There were many fish species that I saw for the first time. I have seen terrapins in books, but saw them here in person for the first time.”

▶20 Indigenous Freshwater Fish Species
Among twenty indigenous species of freshwater fish featured at the show, there were those that have perfect camouflage, looking just like rugged rocks, and others with colorful displays.
Organized by the Maritime & Fisheries Research Institute of Gyeonggi Province, this show is touringthe province with the objective of providing children with an opportunity to familiarize themselves with species that cannot be seen in urban environments.

Beginning with the Gwacheon(과천) event, the Korean Indigenous Freshwater Fish Show will tour six locations inGyeonggi Provincethrough to the end of October. While children can acquaint themselves with species of fish that only exist in the wild at the show, adults can once again see those species that they encountered in mountain streams when they were young.

Article7.Farm Machine AccidentsIncrease in Autumn (160921-3)
[Anchor’s Headline]During the harvest season, when farm machines are used intensively, many farmers suffer injuries due to machine-related accidents, even more frequently than at construction sites.

While adjusting a tractor, a farmer’s fingersbecame stuck in the machine. Luckily, rescuers arrived in time to savehis fingers.
According to an analysis of industrial accidentdata by the Gyeonggi Agricultural Research & Extension Services, farm accidents occur more frequently thanthose in the manufacturing and construction industries.

“Farm machine accidents often occur when farmers operate machinesunder the influence. Accidents by falling also occur frequently when farmers climb greenhouses to repair them.”

▶Use Safety and Protection Equipment
While operating farm machines, the use of safety and protection equipment is essential.
▶Do Not Operate Farming Machines under the Influence
Do not operate machines under the influence of alcohol and always inspect machinesbefore using them.
▶Avoid Straining Postures While Working
When manually handling heavy loads or working in squatting positions, avoid straining postures to prevent injuries.
