Article 1. Honey Bee Disease Alert in Gyeonggi Province (0422)

As the spring-bloom season nears its peak, a Gyeonggi provincial veterinary institute began taking preventive actions against a viral bee disease that has devastated bee farms in Korea in recent years.

▶ Bee Farm in Gunpo, Gyeonggi Province
Last year, beekeeper Lee was helpless as he witnessed most of his bees perishwas forced to shut down two thirds of his beehives. The culprit was sacbrood, a deadly bee virus that causes massive damage to afflicted bee colonies.

“The number of bees suddenly pedeven adult bees were unable to fly. The reproduction rate simply plummeted.”

▶ Sacbrood: Viral Bee Brood Disease with 100% Fatality Rate
These viruses primarily attack bee pupaecause them to die before they can hatch into adult bees.

“Sacbrood outbreaks have already occurred in HanamYeoju this month. Bee farms are required to be extra alert.”
Sacbrood outbreaks were most extensive in 2010; 77 percent of farmed honeybees in Korea perished that year alone.

▶ Gyeonggi Province Veterinary Service Center Supplies Preventive Agents
The Gyeonggi Province Veterinary Service Center recently supplied six anti-sacbrood agents to 1,300 bee farms in the
province.

The center also provides beekeepers with diagnostic services.

“For effective treatmentprevention of the disease, itimportant to get a precise diagnosisnot to misuse drugs.”

Those beehives found positive for viral infection will be sterilizedisolated or incinerated so as to prevent the further spread of the disease.

Article 2. Gyeonggi Provincial Museum on Wheels (0420)

The Gyeonggi Provincial Museumoperating a cultural education service bus for schoolchildren in remote regions,its visiting education programs are receiving positive responsesstudents.

▶ Songra Primary School, Hwaseong
All the students of this primary school are deeply absorbed in a historical play. While listening to the explanations of official attire of the Joseon (조선) Dynasty that followed, students familiarize themselves with their country’s history.
Parked on the school’s playgrounda bus that serves as a miniature museum; children are fascinatedthe ancient artifactshistorical relics it displays. Children also participate in a number of entertaining cultural programs guidedinstructorsthe museum.

▶ Museum Bus Circulates among Regions Lacking Cultural Amenities
This busproviding a great opportunity for cultural activity engagement to children who have little access to such amenities.

The Gyeonggi Provincial Museum bus will continue to visit small primary schools in remote regions of the province until November.

Article 3. Gyeonggi Promotes Multicultural Community Creation (0423)

Gyeonggi Province began promoting the creation of local communities in areas with large multicultural populations so that non-Korean residents can become involved as active community members together with Korean residents.

▶ Village School ‘Ggumtle’, Jeongwang-dong, Suheung
This schoolopen three hours daily, providing foreign language education to local children after regular school hours. All the teachers of the school are native speakers of the languages they teach. They are marriage-based immigrants who are now members of the local community. This school was established as part of Gyeonggi Province’s multicultural community creation endeavors.

To help multicultural communities in which residents of localforeign origins benefiteach other, Gyeonggi Province introduced village schools as an initial effort.

Online marketing through social networking servicesblogsbecoming an effective marketing medium in Korea. Recently, a Gyeonggi agricultural institute opened an online marketing education program for farmers.

Lee, the owner of a Siberian ginseng farm in Pyeongtaek (평택) City,busy taking pictures of his plants. He will use these photos for his blog that he has been keeping as a farm journalfor sharing information with others. Little did he know that his blog would help him increase sales greatly.

Article 5. Urban Farming Guide Group Established in Gyeonggi Province (0422-1)

Gyeonggi Province organized a farming assistant group, entitled ‘Urban Community Farming Frontier’, as part of the province’s ‘WarmBlessed’ community creation policy. Our reporter examined the details.

There are more communal farms appearing in urban residential areas in Korea. This farming assistant groupgeared to help operators of such farms with planning, operationother related activities.

Article 6. Gyeonggi Youth Invents Artificial Arm Created with 3D Printer (0423-3)

A young entrepreneur in Gyeonggi Province has invented electronic artificial armshands d with 3D printers. This prize-winning inventionamong the results of one of the province’s business support programs.

The inventor of this arm was originally inspiredan accident that cost one of his friends his arm. The movements of the artificial arms are controlledthe movements of the wearer’s other muscles. These arms, complete with hands with five digits, were d3D printersare capable of performing most basic tasks.

“When I gave (my injured friend) the first creation, he was very impressed. After trying improved versions, he began to regain hope for his future,his family was also very pleased.”

▶ Price 1/10 of Existing Electronic Artificial Arms
Using components made with 3D printers, this artificial arm costs only one tenth the price of conventional electronic arms. The excellence of Lee’s artificial arms was recognized with a prize at an idea contest organizedthe Contents Korea Lab of Gyeonggi Province. Lee hopes that someday, when he shares his production know-how, anyone can produce artificial arms for themselves easily.
Lee’s 3D-printed electronic artificial arms give hope to 100,000 individuals with arm-related disabilities. Gyeonggi Province will continue to provide active support to those who have creative ideas.

Article 7. Gyeonggi-Gangwon Provincial Cooperation Agreement (0421-1)

On April 11, Gangwon (강원) Province Governor Choi Mun-sun (최문순) visited the Gyeonggi Provincial Government Complex during its cherry blossom festivalexpressed his wishes for inter-provincial coalition.

Gyeonggi-Gangwon Inter-Provincial Cooperation Agreement
On April 20, Gyeonggi Province Governor Nam Kyung-pil respondedvisiting the Gangwaon (강원) Provincial Government Complexsigning an inter-provincial cooperation agreement. This agreement is, in fact, a collection of agreements on fourteen common project issues such as those involving the demilitarized zone.

“We will carry out mutual projects that are specific, practicalincome-producing for the residents of both provinces,”
Two provinces will each establish an utive tee for the implementation of the relevant projects. The two provinces also agreed to cooperate with each other for the successful hosting of the 2018 Winter Olympics.

In addition, preliminary exchanges for project implementation among officials of the two provinces will take placebe completed this year.
