Greetings, everyone, and thank you for joining us for this week’s edition of GTV.
I’m Don Valiant and this is the news from Gyeonggi Province this week.

Article 1.Gyeonggi Call Center Begins Chat Service for Solitary Seniors (0302-3)

The consultants at the Gyeonggi Province Call Center began providing a companion service to solitary seniors by calling and chatting with them regularly. For seniors who live without family, their calls are an antidote to loneliness and rare opportunities to have friendly chats.

81-year-old Kim has been living alone for the past ten years. She rarely socializes and spends most of her days alone at home. Occasional calls from the call center are a welcome deviation from her lonely hours.

The consultants make calls regularly to check on seniors and serve them as companions to talk with.

They listen to seniors and providence them with useful information using their knowledge and skills.
“You said you have varicose veins…” “Yes, dear.”
“Have you tried a therapy? You can get a regular therapy from a hospital.”
“I didn’t know that. I thought there was no cure except surgery. I must check it out.”
Consultants also are happy with the service since they learn from their experiences with seniors.

▶Calls Made Once a Month
This call service by call center consultants, who donate their time even during their days off, is being provided once a month to eighty seniors in the province who live in solitude in underprivileged conditions.

Article 2.Gyeonggi Province IncreasesSME R&D Support (0304-2)

Gyeonggi Province announced that it will increase the amount of this year’s technology development support for small and medium-sized enterprises. Our reporter examined the details.

This company develops testing equipment that is essential for the quality assurance of high-resolution LCD displays. It is one of the beneficiaries of Gyeonggi Province’s SME technology development support.

▶Successful Development of LCD Testers Led to Business with Large Enterprises
Advancing into the LCD testing technology field, this company was able to secure dealings with large Korean enterprises.

“Financing technology development has been, and still is, a great challenge. Any amount of financial assistance could have helped us a lot.”

▶Robot and Design / Yatap-dong, Seongnam
This semiconductor component manufacturer in Anyang (안양) City also credits provincial support for its successful development of production technologies. It now exports its products to Taiwan.

[CG]Since 2008, the SME Technology Development Support Program of Gyeonggi Province has helped more than 500 enterprises, resulting in increased sales of KRW 290 billion, which is 4.5 times the total support amount, as well as the creation of more than 2,000 new jobs,.

▶SME Technology Development Support to Increase to KRW 6.3 Billion This Year
The amount of SME technology development support will increase by 30 percent this year to KRW 6.3 billion.

▶Support Plan Announced on February 5
The final support plan was announced on February 5 and will be presented in detail in March.

The ultimate purpose of the support program is to create astable technology development environment for the growth of small and medium enterprises.

Article3.Gyeonggi Business Centers Active Overseas(0303-2)

The overseas Gyeonggi Business Centers have been playing an important role in promoting the exports of smaller enterprises in the province, with Gyeonggi ranking first in exports among Korean second-tier governments last year.

This water ionizer manufacturer has been experiencing difficulties in overseas marketing due to a lack of information.

▶Gyeonggi Business Center Helps Secure Large Orders from Overseas
Thanks to assistance from the Gyeonggi Business Center in Shanghai, the company was able to secure a USD 1.6 million contract, an unusual feat for a small enterprise established only two years ago.

The overseas provincial trade centers act as local branches for enterprises with limited international marketing capabilities.

▶GSBC Operates 6 Overseas Business Centers
The Gyeonggi Small and Medium Business Center is currently operating six business centers overseas including those in LA, Shanghai and Moscow.

▶Full Trade Process Support
These centers provide full trade support from connecting with buyers to detailed documentary processes for contracts.

▶117 Enterprises Benefited in Exports of USD 23 Million in 2014
Last year alone, these overseas centers assisted 117 enterprises in securing orders amounting to USD 23 million, and helped the province achieve the highest exports in the nation for two consecutive years.

The services of the Gyeonggi Business Centers also include the organization of trade fairsand support for trade exhibition participation.

Article 4.Gyeonggi Special Response Unit Training (0305-3)

On March 4, all members of the regional Special Response Units of Gyeonggi Province received disaster simulation training. Our reporter was there to witness the occasion.

“We could improve our skills in using diverse equipment effectively in real situations. This training also helped us learn how to use our knowledge.”
The Special Response Units were established in 2012 for the effective management of disaster situations such as large fires or the leakage of chemicals or radio active materials. There were initially only two units for northern provincial regions and at the central headquarters. Recently, three regional units have been added for the eastern, western and northeastern regions.
[Multi-screen]Today’s training was organized in tandem with education classes in various types of disasters including those involving aircraft, special chemicals and combustible materials.

“Since their establishment in 2012, the Gyeonggi Special Response Units have been mobilized and acquired know-how in more than 40 safety scenarios.”
The training of the Gyeonggi Special Response Units will continue on an ongoing basis so as to ensure the safety of residents in disasters within the critical survival time.

Article 5.Black Bean Milk Developed in Gyeonggi Province(0303-3)

Small black beans, also known as mouse-eye beans in Korea, are gaining popularity as a health food among consumers. A Gyeonggi provincial institute recently developed a black bean drink and successfully introduced it in the market.

Black bean drinks were also introduced at the student hall shop in Seoul National University.

“A friend of mine told me about the black bean drink, so I tried some. It tastes milder than other bean drinks and I think it’s healthier.”

▶Developed jointly by Advanced Institute of Convergence Technology and BOBSNU
The black bean drink was developed jointly by the Advanced Institute of Convergence Technology located at Seoul National University and BOBSNU, an enterprise operated by the university. Since its introduction through social networking media last month, more than 200,000 black bean drinks have been sold. The drink contains only natural ingredients and no additives.

▶4 Times More Anti-aging Substances than in Other Beans
In oriental medicine, small black beans are thought to have a blood-cleansing effect and are used as detoxicating agent. They also have four times more anti-aging substances than other beans. Black bean drinks are low in calories and so are suitable for calorie-reduced diets.

“It is important to use whole beans. The beans must be roasted to preserve their unique taste and aroma without the need to add sugar.”
Since the small black beans have purifying and anti-aging effects, the institute also plans to develop cosmetics using these beans.

Article 6.Youth New Deal Program for Gyeonggi College Students(0304-3)

Gyeonggi Province has been operating an employment support program entitled ‘Youth New Deal Program’ for students. There are over one million unemployed youths in Korea. Many of them are college graduates.

Jang, a senior college student in his final semester, has been trying very hard to find employment. He has submitted several employment applications, but without success.

“Over the past year and a half, I have been preparing myself for employment. But writing a self profile was the biggest challenge. I had no idea what or how to write.”
Frustrated, Jang joined the Youth New Deal Program of Gyeonggi Province.

▶Youth New Deal Program
Employment Education Customized for Students and Enterprises
Students participating in this program are provided with tematic training in employment processes from self-searching to resume writing to job interviews. Students are also provided with one-on-one consultations with employment specialists to establish personal employment strategies.
The Youth New Deal Program was launched in 2006 to provide customized employment services to both graduating students and recruiting enterprises. This year, the program is being operated at 25 universities and involves 1,400 students.

“The education program for college students is based on a 2-credit tem. For enterprises, we conduct an annual survey of employment requirements so as to meet their demand with customized student education.”
The Youth New Deal Program achieved an 80 percent employment rate among participants last year, and proved effective in helping youths with employment problems.

Article 7.Gyeonggi Expands Environmental Design Projects (0302-2)

Last year, Gyeonggi Province launched environmental design projects on a trial basis in selected underdeveloped areas for which redevelopment plans had been revoked.The provincial government plans to implement the project in more areas this year.

▶Anyang 3-dong Environmental Design Project
This area in Anyang (안양) City was refurbished completely last year. Trash-ridden alleys,dilapidated building walls and dark corners frequented by delinquent juveniles were replaced by delightfully repainted walls, a refreshing park and open spaces surrounded by trees. A CCTVtem was installed and parking lots for women were assigned for safety.

“Back alleys were dark and scary at night. But our teachers and senior neighbors now feel safe to use the alleys.”
This area is one of two project areas for environmental design,internationally known as CPTED, that were implemented by Gyeonggi Province last year. The other was a similar area in Goyang (고양) City for which refurbishment work will be completed in March. In Goyang (고양) City, local residents formed a special committee for this project and participated in planning throughout the whole process from design to implementation.

▶Environmental Design Projects for This Year
Seojeong-dong in Pyeongtaek and Jeongwang-dong in Siheung
For this year’s environmental design projects, the two old multi-family housing areas in the cities of Pyeongtaek (평택) and Siheung (시흥) were selected.

“Major effects can be achieved with a relatively small amount of investment. Environmental improvement can also prevent crime.”
There are many improvement options. For example, in hidden corners, walls can be replaced with low fences, or emergency bells and CCTV tems can be installed. Safe passages and common vegetable gardens can be also created for the comfort and enjoyment of residents.
