Earlier this month, Gyeonggi Province organized a Leading Market Expo in Anyang (안양) City as part of its traditional market promotion events. Our reporter visited this event, which featured local specialty products from around the province.

2014 Gyeonggi Province Leading Market Expo
Pyeongchon (평촌) Central Park of Anyang (안양) City turned into a market fair during this event in which eighty-five leading traditional markets in Gyeonggi Province participated.
Visitors to the park are pleasantly surprised to find themselves in the midst of a traditional market scene in which they can purchase rare traditional commodities such as herbs and folk remedies as well as wooden pillows at low prices.
The eateries feature snacks from the old days and evoke childhood memories.

“It is like seeing all the markets in one place. There are lots of things to see and eat, things that I enjoyed when I was young. I am glad to have my son experience these things with me.”
There are also special corners for traditional games and food-making demonstrations that draw the interest of families and tourists.

“We used to play the foot shuttlecock game, but children these days don’t do that anymore. I really enjoyed playing it here again.”
This traditional market expo was organized jointly by Gyeonggi Province and the Small Enterprise and Market Services so as to promote non-brand quality products of Gyeonggi Province.

“We have been benchmarking other markets for good products so that our merchants can expand their product base and introduce similar products at our market…”
This traditional market expo also provided locals in urban communities with an opportunity to appreciate the charm of traditional markets.

Article 2. The 2nd Gyeonggi Equestrian Games (1020-3)

The Gyeonggi Equestrian Games were held in an equestrian sports ring temporarily established on reclaimed land on the western coast of the province. Horseback riding is fast becoming a popular sport in Gyeonggi Province.

The 2nd Gyeonggi Equestrian Games
These national equestrian games, hosted by Gyeonggi Province, are now in their second year. The first event was held at Hosu (호수) Park in Goyang (고양) City last year.
A total of 300 riders of all ages, from primary school students to adults, competed in six categories at the Eco Farm Land currently being constructed on the Hwaong (화옹) Reclaimed Land.

“Equestrian games were usually held in distant locations. This time, it was close to my home, so I felt more relaxed and could better concentrate on the games.”
First Long-Distance Event in Gyeonggi Province
With the opening of the first out-of-ring course along the shore of Hwaseong (화성) Lake, Gyeonggi Province could include a long-distance event in this year’s games for the first time.
The games consisted of three contestant levels: primary school students, middle and high school students, and adults.
There were also experiential horseback riding programs and dressage demonstrations for visitors.

Since Gyeonggi Province is home to half of the 44,000 horseback riding fans in Korea, Gyeonggi Province leads the popularization of equestrian sports in the nation.

“We will actively promote the establishment of equestrian sports rings and increase the number of trained horses.”
These equestrian games were more than a sports event. They truly were a festival with horses for contestants as well as for visitors and horseback-riding lovers.

Article 3. Young Gyeonggi Enterprise Sells Its Technology to NASA (1021-1)

An enterprise in Gyeonggi Province secured an agreement with NASA of the United States for the application of its proprietary technology in space vehicles. Only years ago, this company was a two-person enterprise struggling to survive.

Technology Transfer Agreement with NASA for Application in Core Space Industrial Fields
NASA found this technology had potential applications in space docking, multi-level rockets and locking mechanisms in space vehicles.
It can also be used in many other fields including shipbuilding, construction and defense.
The success of this company is attributed to the Gyeonggi-UT Innovation Program that supports smaller enterprises of high technological potential in Gyeonggi Province in cooperation with the University of Texas.

Since 2008, this program has enabled small and medium-sized enterprises in Gyeonggi Province to link with business partners in the United States.
University of Texas Opens Its Resources to Gyeonggi Enterprises
Under this program, the University of Texas opened its industrial support resources to enterprises in Gyeonggi Province to help them access the American market.

81 Gyeonggi Enterprises Benefited from UT Program
Over the past six years, eight-one enterprises have benefited from the Gyeonggi-UT Program, securing agreements amounting to more than USD 40 million while also creating 324 new jobs.

Article 4. 2014 Gyeonggi Province Self-support Enterprise Meeting (1021-2)

Members of self-support enterprises in Gyeonggi Province gathered together to boost their moral. Self-support enterprises are supported by local administrations to provide residents in low income brackets with employment opportunities.

More than 2,000 members of self-support enterprises in Gyeonggi Province braved the rain to attend the meeting held in Anseong (안성) City.
This meeting was held by the Gyeonggi Province Self-support Center Association under the motto of ‘Coexistence, Cooperation and Communication’.

32 Self-support Enterprises in Gyeonggi Province with 3,000 Jobs
In Gyeonggi Province, there are thirty-two self-support enterprises that provide employment and services to more than 3,000 individuals in low income brackets.
Gyeonggi Province to Help Self-supporters through Various Programs
In addition to promoting self-support business projects, the Gyeonggi Provincial Government will implement various other programs to help economically underprivileged individuals achieve economic independence.

Article 5. Gyeonggi Architectural Culture Tour (1021-3)

An architecture tour, which consisted of visits to architectural monuments of the past and present in Gyeonggi Province, took place as part of the Gyeonggi Architectural Culture Festival.

The tour guide explains the architectural style of the fortress, which was constructed during the Joseon (조선) period on a mountain ridge 500 meters above sea level.
Pangyo Techno Valley
The next stop of the tour spans hundreds of years to Pangyo (판교)Techno Valley where futuristic architecture is concentrated.
Pangyo is a fast-growing urban district close to Seoul, and is still being developed.
Dongtan Polarion Square
The tour group then moves on to Dongtan (동탄) Polari on Square in Suwon (수원) City. This combined commercial and residential building received the grand prize at the Gyeonggi Architectural Awards last year.

“This building is structured in such a way that its concrete blocks can be separated and restructured like Lego. It consists of four-cell units. Spaces are formed by combinations of 2, 4, or 8 units as needed by the residents.”
Gyeonggi Architectural Culture Festival
This tour was organized as part of the Gyeonggi Architectural Culture Festival by Gyeonggi Province and five architecture-related organizations for adults and eighty students aspiring to become architects.

Buildings reflect the architectural style as well as the lifestyle of the period in which they were constructed. Gyeonggi Province abounds with such buildings.

Article 6. Gyeonggi Governor Nam’s European Tour (1020-2)

Gyeonggi Province Governor Nam Kyung-pil has returned from his first European mission. During the mission, he met with political and industrial leaders and visited industrial sites as well as a senior residential complex.

In Bavaria, Governor Nam discussed ways in which to promote economic cooperation between the regions.
Governor Nam Visits Senior Community Common Homes
Governor Nam’s last stop in Europe was a visit to a senior community common home, a housing complex for seniors developed with support from a social financial institute.
His tour was cut short by the occurrence of the air vent collapse in Pangyo (판교)Techno Valley, which caused many casualties.
He returned home on October 18 instead of 19.

Regarding the air vent collapse in Pangyo (판교), the assembly committee members harshly accused Gyeonggi Province of failure in safety administration.

National Assembly Members Urge Remedial Actions
All the Safety Administration Committee members urged Gyeonggi Province to take measures to prevent further accidents like the Pangyo (판교) incident.

In his answer, Gyeonggi Province Governor Nam Kyung-pil stated that Gyeonggi Province will conduct safety investigations of all air vents in Gyeonggi Province by the end of the year and develop comprehensive policies to prevent such incidents from ever occurring again.

There was also a question regarding the implementation of the GTX railway construction projects.

The National Assembly inspection of Gyeonggi Province continued on October 23with the Land Committee.
For any issues identified by the National Assembly committees, Gyeonggi Province plans to take active measures for improvement.
