Article 1. Gyeonggi Boat Show Adopts Marine Safety for 2014 Theme (0602-3)

Marking its seventh year, the Korea International Boat Show hosted by Gyeonggi Province has become one of the largest boat shows in Asia.This year’s event opened in Goyang (고양) City with marine safety asits theme.

This annual boat show opened at KINTEX in Goyang (고양) Cityon June 12th for a four-day run.
Marine Safety This Year’s Theme
Recognizing the necessity for public marine safety education, the show organizers adopted marine safety as this year’s theme and prepared the event accordingly.
There is a new Marine Safety Theme Hall in which a range of marine safety and rescue equipment is demonstrated for public education.
Located just after the entry point for maximum exposure to the public, this hall is operated for public education andspecialistdemonstrationsas well as forvisitor experiences.
Conferences to Discuss Marine Safety
As part of the event,conferences were organized for the discussion of marine safety in various subfields.
There are presentations by overseas specialists specially invited for this event as well as discussions in which the members of the public also participate.
However, with a variety of commercial programs, this year’s show by no means lacks the industrial promotion and festivity elements that attracted 33,000 visitors last year.

“The purpose is to promote industry growth and marine leisure activities by strengthening the status of the show as one of the three major boat shows in Asia and as arepresentative marine leisure industry exhibition event.”
With more enterprises participating and booths being operated than originally planned, the Gyeonggi Provincial Government expects that this year’s show will result in export deals of more than USD 100 million.
Article 2. Gyeonggi Institute Helps Hog Farm Deodorization Using Microbes (0603-1)

The generation of offensive odor has been one of major problems faced by livestock farmers. The source chemicals of such foul odor can also be harmful to animals. To address such problems, the Gyeonggi Province Veterinary Service Center developed a deodorization method using non-hazardous microbes.

Hog Farm / Hwaseong City, Gyeonggi Province
At this hog farm in Hwaseong (화성) City of Gyeonggi Province, where approximately two thousand pigs are being raised, ammonia readings reach 10 ppm.
That is not bad relative toaverage readings for hog farms, but it is still a cause of complaints among neighbors. Even hogs can suffer respiratory problems if the ammonia content of the air exceeds 15 ppm.

Microbes Supplied to 29 Hog Farms For Trial Runs
The Gyeonggi Province Veterinary Service Center supplied microbes that it developed for deodorization to twenty-nine hog farms in the province for trial runs.

“I am holding a bottle of photosynthetic bacteria, which is anon-hazardous microorganism. They have excellent deodorizing effects and can replace existing chemical deodorizers.”
The veterinary service center also supplied four other microorganisms including bacteria that disintegrate organic materials and strengthen immunity as well asa nutritious enzyme.
Applied as a mixture, these microorganisms can be used for sterilization and deodorization by spraying as well as for the strengthening of animalimmunity throughadministration with feed.

“There is a growing interest in non-antibiotic, eco-friendly livestock farming agents among consumers and livestock farmers. That is why we develop and supply bio-deodorizers using non-hazardous microorganisms…”
The veterinary service center plans to supply approximately eight tons of microbes to livestock farms every month until October, and will expand its supplies to all farms upon the realization of successful results from the trial applications.
Article 3. Gyeonggi Province Lifelong Education Portal Site Opens (0605-3)

The Gyeonggi Provincial Institute for Lifelong Learning recently reformed its site into a new portal site that provides comprehensive knowledge and information about lifelong education courses available in the province. Our reporter investigated how to utilize the site.

This new portal site aims to help individuals find suitable courses for self-improvement or for their job performance.
It provides information about and links to all the online courses available from more than 3,900 adult education operators in Gyeonggi Province.

This site also provides links to events and exhibitions as well as other useful information about employment and living provided by each education operator.
More than seven thousand free online classes on a wide range of subjects such as foreign languages, public examinations and human sciences can be accessed through this portal site.
User Participation Corners Available
In addition to learning and information gathering, there are special corners in which users can participate directly.
For example, in the Skill Sharing Corner, users can share their knowledge and skills with others, and in the MediterraneanCorner, they can communicate with specialists.

Article 4. Gyeonggi Streams Score Highest inRiver Restoration Contest (0602-1)

The Anyang (안양) Stream and the Heiri (헤이리) Stream of Gyeonggi Province won the highest awards in the Ecological River Restoration Project Contest held by the Korean Ministry of Environment. The provincial government plans to use these cases as models for other similar projects.

Anyang Stream Revival Project Team Succeeds in Ecological River Restoration
The Anyang (안양) Stream in the 1970s and 1980s was a health hazard with deplorable contamination and foul smells. No fish could survive in the water.
Thanks to the efforts of the Anyang (안양) Stream Revival Project Team that was established in 1999, this stream has been reborn as a picturesque ecological river to which lush vegetation, birds, fish and insectshave returned.

The Heiri (헤이리) Stream of Paju City also received the highest award in the same national contest.
Local Residents Formed Resident Committee and Led Stream Restoration
The restoration work of the Heiri (헤이리) Stream of Paju (파주) City was driven by local residents who formed a special resident committee for this purpose; theyundertookthe clean-upwork and marsh creation themselves.

These two streams of Gyeonggi Provincewon twoout of three grand prizes,one in the restoration performance category and one in the governance category, of the national river restoration contest
Gyeonggi Province to Apply Successful Cases to Other Provincial River Restoration Projects
The Gyeonggi Provincial Government will utilize these two successful restoration projects as model cases for other river restoration projects. These cases are also likely to be the subjects of benchmarking by other regions in Korea.

On June 2nd, senior public officials from four Asian countries attended presentations on provincial policies provided at the Gyeonggi Institute of Science & Technology Promotion.
The foreign officials visited Gyeonggi Province after participating in an international program offered by the Korea International Cooperation Agency.

They were also impressed by the cooperation projects jointly pursued by the industrial, academic and research sectors as well as by small and medium business promotion policies.

The purpose of the visit by these Asian officials is to studythe know-how of the successful science and technology policies of Gyeonggi Province.
100+ Overseas Public Officials from 10+ Countries Visited Gyeonggi Province in 2013
Last year alone, overa hundred public officials from more than ten countries visited Gyeonggi Province for similar purposes.
Gyeonggi Province Home to 42% of Knowledge-based Manufacturing Industry
Gyeonggi Province is home to 42 percent of the knowledge-based manufacturing industry of Korea, including semiconductor, electronics and IT manufacturers.
Its scientific and technological potential is well recognized internationally.
Article 6. Hwaseong City Section of Regional Road 322 Reopens (0530-1)

Local Road 322 in Hwaseong City had been a commuters’ nightmare. However, the recent opening of a new road connecting Soogi-ri (수기리) and Annyeong-dong (안녕동) resolved the constant traffic congestion that plagued this section of Road 322 for many years.

This section of Local Road 322 suffered heavy traffic congestion,especially during rush hours.
With the reopening of the road after widening and extensionwork that took four years, drivers can now travel without having to keep their feet on their brake pedals.

The four-lane,0.63-kilometer section of the road was first opened last December.
It is the next 1.27-kilometer section,up to Soogi-ri (수기리),that opened recently.
Travel Time Shortened by 5 Minutes.
The travel time on this section was reduced by at least five minutes, and annual logistic cost reduction is estimated to be approximately KRW 1 billion.
The traffic distribution effect is also expected to contribute to balanced regional development.

“Driving speed was improved by 10 km per hour and driving time has been reduced by about 5 minutes. When the remaining Buncheon-Songtan section is completed, traffic conditions in Annyeong-dong area will be further improved.”
The Construction Headquarters of Gyeonggi Province will continue to improve local traffic conditionsthrough the extension and widening of regionally important road sections.
Article 7. Gyeonggi Institute Succeeds in Culturing Short-necked Clams (0602-2)

A Gyeonggi provincial instituterecently succeeded in culturing short-necked clams, one of the most popular shellfish among Koreans. The short-necked clam population has dropped to a fraction of what it was only decades ago due to environmental changes and land reclamation projects.

After two years of test culturing that took place on a 1-hectare mudflat near Tando (탄도) Port in Ansan (안산) City, themoment of truth has arrived, and local residents join in the harvest.
Short-necked Clam Culture Began in 2012 in Hwaseong Beach
The test culturing was conducted by the Gyeonggi Maritime & Fisheries Research Institute.

“I worked for about 20 minutes and can declare that the harvest was a tremendously successful. Considering the price of KRW 5,000 per kilogram, one can earn KRW 50,000 easily from a harvest of only 10 kg.”

The test culturingwas performed on a mudflat that proved to effectivelysupport both artificially introduced and naturallyoccurringseed clams.

Hopes are high among local residents after the successful culturethat proved these small shellfish still have the potential for increasing their incomeand restoring natural resources.
