Article 1. A Book of 37 Unsung Heroes of Gyeonggi Province (0701-3)

A book of thirty-seven unselfish public servants of Gyeonggi Province was recently published. They are some of the many heroes who have been dedicated to their work, as well as those who have perished in the line of unselfish duty.

A public health center physical therapist Han Sangdeok (한상덕) has devoted himself to the care of seniors for the past seventeen years. It was his idea that the center open a healthcare program for senior citizens. He also visits disabled individuals every Saturday to provide personal voluntary services.

“There are many physically challenged individuals who have difficulties with simple daily tasks, but have nobody to care for them. I consider it my duty to help themproviding physical therapy.”
2. ‘Beauty of DutyPassion’ Book Launch
Titled, ‘Beauty of DutyPassion’, this book tells heartwarming stories of unsung heroes who,Han, dedicated their lives to others. The heroes themselves,their families, were invited to a book launch event, held at the Gyeonggi Provincial Government Office.
3. Jeong Seon-ah / Wife of Late Firefighter Lee Seong-un
“I appreciate the recognition of his sacrifice. With this book, his altruismself-sacrifice willbe in vain. People will learnhim. It will also make my children be proud of their late father.”
This book will also help the public re-appreciate the services of public servantssee them with a different perspective.
4. Gyeonggi Province Vice Governor Park Soo-Yeong
“There are many other unsungunseen heroes who are devoted to helping others. We will keep discovering themrecognizing their heroic deeds which are exemplary to other public servants.”
In addition to public servants, the passion for duty exhibitedthese thirty-seven heroes will also be recognizedall the members of public.
Article 2. Gyeonggi Government’s ‘Lunch-Sharing’ Campaign (0702-1)

‘The Gyeonggi Provincial Government’‘Korea World Vision’ jointly launched a fundraising campaign to help ‘lunch-skipping’ children, in the province as well as overseas. Korea was the first beneficiary country of ‘World Vision’, an international relief NGO established during the Korean War to help war orphans.

1. ‘Lunch-Sharing’ Campaign
Therea continuous flow of donors at the collection booths erected at the plaza. Coins are poured onto the tablebread-shaped moneyboxes. These moneyboxes have been distributed at schoolsorganizations in the province for this campaign.

This campaign also features a sponsor program for continuous direct support for children in Gyeonggi Province or in Africa.

“I am sponsoring a child in Africa. I hope that, in the future, he will grow into someone capable of helping othershimself now.”
After sixty years since Korea received donations through World Vision, it has now become a donating county through the same organization. The collected money will be spent on the provision of lunches, as well as on the living costs of children in crisis.
4. Gyeonggi Province Vice Governor Kim Hee-gyeom
“We are grateful that many residents braved hot weather to participate in this campaign. Their donations will bring hopesdreams to children in need.”
There are a large number of children in the world who are in a dire situationthey have to skip their meals. For these children, lunch might probably be their immediate hopesdreams.
Article 3. Resin-based Remedy against Oak Wilt Disease (0703-1)

The ‘Gyeonggi Forest Environment Research Institute’ announced that it has developed a simpleeffective remedy against oak wilt disease.

Also called ‘Oak AIDS’ this diseaseprevalent predominantly in Gyeonggi Province. First identified in Seongnam (성남) in 2004, itspreada species of bark beetles that carry the pathogen.
1. Gwangnung Bark Beetles, Carriers of Oak Wilt Disease Bacteria
The inflicted oak tree develops numerous holes madethe beetles in its bark,eventually dies because waternutrients can no longer be delivered above the bark section.

Itestimated that a total of 330,000 oak trees in the nation have been inflicted with this disease so far, with a hundredseventy thousand of them concentrated in Gyeonggi Province alone.
2. Gwon Geon-hyeong / Researcher, Gyeonggi Forest Environment Research Institute
“Damageconcentrated in the central regions of the peninsula. Inflicted treesto wilt rapidly in JulyAugust because water loses its channel at the bark,eventually the trees die.”
Sticky insect traps, which are a usual remedy for this type of tree disease, were found ineffective on the oak wilt disease.
3. Environment-friendly insecticide
This new remedyenvironment-friendly because it uses pine resin as its base, instead of chemicals.

“This new insecticide can be applied simplyspraying it on the surface of the bark withoutto cover the entire bark section with protective wrappings.”
This insecticide also uses natural substances to minimize damage to the environment

“Itmuch less toxic to oak trees because it uses natural substances extractedpine resin. It also s a waterproof layer that enhances its effectsustains through the period of the rainy season.”
Itknown to have a preventive effect of ninety percent. This new insecticide will be used nationwidenext year after its trial use this year.
Article 4. Illegal Anti-impotence Drugs Uncovered (0703-3)

The ‘Gyeonggi Special Judicial Police’ uncovered fake anti-impotence drugs sold under the guise of natural herbs. These fake herbal medicines are in fact mixtures of a chemical drugherbs.

Policemen found bottles of unknown medicines in the drawers.
1. Anti-impotence Drug Mixed with Herbs
These are illegal drugs that contain commercially available anti-impotence drugs mixed with herbs. The operator of this illegal business sold seven hundredfour million Korean won worth of these fake medicines over the past three years. Another individual in his fifties cheated seniorsselling silkworm tablets presenting it as natural erection booster.
2. Side Effects
Since these drugs contain chemical drugs, their s complained about various side effects. One must be suspicious of the legitimacy of natural drugs they carry unexpectedly low prices.
3. Cho Jeong-ho / Chief Investigator, Gyeonggi Special Judicial Police Anyang Team
“They cleverly disguised their products as gift itemssold them in a clandestine manner to avoid being caught. We will strengthen the crackdown with cooperationrelated agencies.”
The Gyeonggi Special Judicial Police confiscated the illegal drugs foundprosecuted the offenders.
Article 5. The Gyeonggi Economic Cooperation Delegation Returns (0701-2)

The ‘Economic Cooperation Delegation’ of Gyeonggi Province ledgovernor Kim Moon-soo (김문수) returnedits tour of Europe after successfully securing a number of investments.

1. Inducement of Investments for USD 280 Million
The companies that will invest in Gyeonggi Province include four high-tech companies in Sweden, DenmarkGermany as well as two automobile parts manufacturers, one IT product manufacturerone researchdevelopment organization. The total amount of investmentsequivalent to two hundredeighty million US Dollars.
2. More Than 300 New Jobs
These investments are expected to have the effect of creating more than three hundred new jobs.

Article 6. Gyeonggi Governor Meets National Assemblymen (0702-2)

Gyeonggi Province Governor Kim Moon-soo (김문수) recently invited the national assembly members representing the province, to a political meeting. Held at the National Assembly, it was the second of such meetings, following the first that was held in February.

The members of the meeting discussed issued in nine categories including the GTX, local tax laws,childcare

Unlike previous meeting, Governor Kim visited the National Assembly’s leader of the opposition before the meeting.
4. Gyeonggi Delivered Copy of Joint Agreement between Three Local Government
During the meeting the copies of last month’s joint agreement between Gyeonggi Province, SeoulIncheon (인천) were delivered to the assembly members. It indicates that the ‘Gyeonggi Provincial Government’ considered the local taxeducation issues in this agreement, issues that should be reviewedthe national point of view.

“I wouldto make it clear that the Central Government must no longer dump its dutiesresponsibilities to the local governments.”
There are numerous challenging issues within Gyeonggi Province that need to be addressed. Let us hope that this meeting will help resolve these issues more efficiently.
Article 7. Gyeonggi Government to Support Cooperatives (0702-3)

While there are an increasing number of cooperatives between smaller enterprises, the ‘Gyeonggi Provincial Administration’ invited six universities to join efforts in helping these cooperatives realize their potential.

1. Furniture Factory in Gwangju, Gyeonggi province
Twenty-four small companies in the furniture industry in Korea such as this one formed a Kitchen Furniture Cooperative.

It was the strategy they needed to adopt in order to survive the insurmountable competitionlarge enterprises. From this cooperative, they have developed a common brand.

4. 161 Cooperatives in Gyeonggi Province
Since the effectuation of the Basic Cooperative Law in December last year, the number of cooperatives increased to 161 in Gyeonggi Province, rangingfarmers to the disabled.
5. ‘2013 Gyeonggi Province Cooperatives Vision Declaration’ / Gyeonggi SmallMedium Business Center (June 21st)
However, many of these cooperatives, which are mainly affiliatedsmall enterprises, find it difficult to establish themselves as effective organizations
6. 6 Universities Joined Gyeonggi Province for Joint Support
Six universities agreed to join the ‘Gyeonggi Provincial Administration’ in helping these cooperatives with support in their weak areas including marketingdesign.

“Most of cooperative members are struggling small enterprises. They need helponly in establishing their tems in democraticcooperative manners, but also for their successful business.”
Korean industries are characterizedthe domination of large enterprises these cooperatives may provide a breakthrough for smaller enterprises.
