Greetings, everyone,thank you for joining us for this week’s edition of GTV.

1. Gyeonggi Renews Fight against Tuberculosis (0502-1)

The Gyeonggi Provincial Administration began operating a special team to control the cases of tuberculosis, a disease which has long been considered eradicated in Korea.

1) TB Spreads Person to Person
There have been an increasing number of TB cases reported in Gyeonggi Province for the past five years. TBa highly infectious disease that can easily be spreadperson to person via airborne germs – especially among family members,everyone whoexposed to tubercle bacillus however, develops the disease.

“The number (of TB cases)increasing mainly due to a lack of proper control. Patients are also responsible because they often stop or neglect taking medication, prolonging the disease.”

The number of TB cases in Gyeonggi Province increased5,400 in 2007 to over 6,000 in 2010to over 7,000 in 2011.

“The lack of public awareness on the danger of tuberculosisalso one of the reasons for the increase of tuberculosis case.”
The provincial administration announced that it aims to reduce the number of new TB cases as well as TB-related mortalitytwenty percentthe year 2017 through operation of a TB control team, named G-TB. The activities of G-TB will concentrate on TB-susceptible areaspopulation groups including those with foreign origins.
4) Ryu Yeong-cheol / Director of Gyeonggi Province Health Policy Division
“TB isjust a personal condition, but italso a socially significant disease,it requires tematic control. We developed a comprehensive TB control plan aimed at reducing the number of new TB cases20 to 30 percent.”
Korea currently ranks first in the TB occurrence rate among the thirty-four OECD nations. The TB control plan of Gyeonggi Province will hopefully improve the situation.

2. Korea’s First FuneralMourning Culture Museum Opens (0503-1)

The first funeralmourning culture museum opened in Gyeonggi Province on the 24th of April. Our reporter was there.

1) Yearee Museum in Yongin
This museum, named Ye-aree (예아리), features displays of a variety of funeralmourning culturesaround the world, such as the preliminary burials in ancient Korea which prepared the deceased for a journey to the next world,the three thousand year-old custom of the Boyen tribe in China, who hung the coffina wooden ledge built on the high cliffs.
2) World FuneralMourning Culture
There are also miniature displays of the world-famous Chinese emperor Qin’s terra-cotta warriorshorses as well as Japanese traditional funeral carriagesEgyptian Tutankhamen’s wooden coffin.
3) Lim Ho-yeong / Director of Yearee Museum
“This objectives of this non-profit museumto provide the viewers with an indirect opportunity to experience various funeralmourning culture in Koreain the world.”
In Korea, hem clothgenerally believed to have been the material used traditionally for the garments of the deceases, but in this museum, we discover that it is, in fact, ordinary formal attire that was used, just as the one shown here in the miniature reproduction of King Jeongjo (정조)’s funeral ceremony.

3. Employment Opportunities for Gyeonggi Social Rockers (0506-1)

Social Rockers of Gyeonggi Province will be provided with employment opportunitiesthe provincial government through its cooperation with private companies.

‘Social Rocker’a nickname for voluntary activists who work for Gyeonggi Provincethe provincial government via various social network services (SNS).
1) SNS Specialist TrainingEmployment Opportunities for Social Rockers
Recognizing the skillspotential power of ‘Social Rockers’, the Gyeonggi Provincial Administration devised an employment program, termed ‘Social Recruitment Program’ to allow them to maximize their capabilities in the field of SNS. Three private companies agreed to cooperate in their trainingemployment.
2) Yoon Gyeong-hoon / Managing Director of e-Land World
“We will look into the specifications of individuals,the usual qualification specifications, but specifications as a potential SNS specialist.”
Forty three ‘Social Rockers’, including UCC contest winnerspower bloggers, were finally ed for the ‘SNS Specialist Training Course’.
3) Park Tae-wook / Gyeonggi Social RockerSNS Specialist Course Trainee
“I felt good about working as a social rocker knowing that the residents, especially those in the northern part of the province, could benefitmy work. Being a Gyeonggi resident myself, I am also proud of my work for the promotion of the province.”
The trainees of the ‘SNS Specialist Course’ will receive education in various SNS subjects including SNS marketing planningstorytelling planning,SNA data analysis. After the training, each social rocker will be assessedbe offered a job as an intern or a regular employee.
4) Gyeonggi Province Vice Governor Kim Hee Gyeom
“SNS channels will be used to promote this training program, so that many enterprises either in Gyeonggi Province or in other regions, that recognize the potential of social rockers, can participate in this program.”
The Gyeonggi Provincial Administration plans to invite more private enterprises that can benefitemploying SNS specialists to this program, as part of its youth employment promotion policy.

4. US Soldiers’ Familiarization Tour of a Korean Farm Village (0506-2)

During the ‘Children’s Day’ weekend, member of the ‘US Marine Corps’their families were invited to a familiarization tour of Korean farm villagesenjoyed experiencing Korean culture. Our reporter was there to witness the occasion.

In this village in Gyeonggi Province, people are gathered to join in rice cake making. However, the participants areusual Korean peasants, but they are US soldierstheir families. Children are awkward in handling the rice cake mallet, but theyseem to bea wonderful time.

Another purpose of this familiarization tour of Korean farm villageto promote the consumption of Korean eco-friendly farm products.

5. Direct Seeding Technique (0507-1)

The Gyeonggi Agricultural ResearchExtension Services, or GARES, announced that it has developed a direct rice seeding technique, which will have a significant effect in reducing labor requirements.

Itrice planting season in Korea. Transplantation has been the bestthe only method of rice farming for hundreds of years, requiring a complexcostly seedling preparationtransplantation procedure.

3) 2013 Direct Rice Seeding Demo / Icheon City (May 7th)
Rice plantinga major challenge among Korean farmers since itdifficult to find hired handsthe cost of machineriestheir operationvery high. In a farmland in Icheon (이천), the GARES demonstrated direct seeding of rice that doesrequire use of seed plottransplantation.

“Direct seeding can save a large amount of labor costtime,may reduce the total cost of rice productionas much as 30%.”
Farmers who adopted this new technique showed positive responses.
5) Ryu Hong-ryul / Direct Rice Seeding Farmer
“It only requires three days of soaking the seed in water before directly seeding, saving a lot of timeeffort. I think it will be helpful for rice farming.”
GARES will continue to work to improve the direct rice seeding technique.
6) Lee Soo-young / Manager of Eco-friendly Technology Department, GARES
“We organized this demonstration to speed up the promotion of the use of direct seeding.”
This new direct seeding technique will help farmers regain a competitive edgeovercome the difficulties causedthe effectuation of free trade agreements.

6. 2013 Good Game Show Korea (0508-1)

A trade fair for therapeutic games, formerly known as the ‘Gyeonggi Functional Games Festival’ will be held later this month under a new name, ‘Good Game Show Korea’. Our reporter examined the details.

Organizedthe Gyeonggi Contents Agency, the ‘Good Game Show Korea’scheduled to be held for three days at KINTEX in GoyangMay 24th, with a wider range of games than last year, including those for seniors. It will feature various functional games as well as mobile contents for smart phone s.
5) Over 400 Booths
More than 250 gaming industries will be present at over four hundred booths, whichfour times as many as the previous occasion. During the last year’s event, many buyersoverseas visited the showpurchased the contents amounting to ten million US Dollars

This year’s show, whichscheduled for three months earlier than it was last year,expected to become a representative game show in Korea.

7. Free Marine Academy in Jeongok Port (130507-3)

A free ‘Pre-Marine Academy’ featuring various marine sports experiencing programs opened as a preliminary event for the Korea Match Cup of World Racing Tour, whichschedule for later in May.

Most of the Marine Academy programs are provided free of charge. There are different programs for different age groups.
7) 2013 Korea Match Cup, World Match Racing Tour / Jeongok Port (May 29th-June 2nd)
When the Korean event of the World Match Racing Tour begins on the 29th of this month, there will be much more variety of programs for visitors, including those for families
