Title 1. 2nd International Next-generation Global Leader Conference (0924-1)

In September, Gyeonggi Province sponsored the 2012 International Next-generation Global Leader Conference, inviting youths12 countries to a 6-day event that included conferences at Kyonggi University, cultural toursa visit to the DMZ.

1) Conferences at Kyonggi University (September 21st – 25th)
During the conference, a total of 80 youthsnations around the world including Germany, the USBrazil, were assigned to a number of subject groupsdiscussed politics, human rights, the environment,science as well as artculture.
2) Objective: Formation of Visions of Young Generations
Marking its second occasion this year, this conference aims to provide young international representatives with venues for the discussion of global issuesthe formation of visions for future, which, according to a Gyeonggi official, differentiates this conferenceother international youth exchange programs.

Gyeonggi Province has been implementing a project to help youths find employment in the fields of scienceengineering. Over the past decade, Korea has been afflicteda so-called ‘scienceengineering major crisis’ since the number of university graduates with such majors increases every year the demand for human resources in these fieldsfor higher degree holders.

Immediately after graduatinguniversity, Hong Ji-woong (홍지웅) was employedthis company in Hwaseong (화성) City thanks to the Quality Human Resources Tracking Project of Gyeonggi Province. He participated in a training program through this projectwas backedthe recommendation of the provincial government.

“I was preparing for employment applications to large enterprises. Without the training I received in the Quality Human Resources Tracking Project, I doubt I would have been able to find employment.”

The operator of the project, the Korea Electronics Technology Institute, organizes on-site training programsalso acts as a matchmaker between traineespotential employers

6) 50% Employment Success Rate
Of a hundred-and-fifty student who attended the project training courses, 75 have successfully found employment to date, marking a 50% employment rate.
Gyeonggi Province considers its Quality Human Resources Tracking Project an effective means to alleviate the problem of employment mismatchingwill expand its training programs to help more youths as well as recruiting companies.

On September 25th, Gyeonggi Province hosted a large job fair in which 85 companiesmore than 2,500 job searchers in the province participated.

Over 2,000 job searchers visited this job fair; some tried their lucksome gathered information for better preparation. Everyone, however, including participating companies, benefitedthis event in which they could take advantage of numerous employmentrecruitment opportunities simplygathering together.
Title 4. Gyeonggi Discloses Artificial Structure Wall Design Guidelines (0921-3)

The walls of artificial urban structures often present a dismal air of dark grey concretemenacing structural ugliness. As part of its efforts to improve the appearance of the urban environment, the Gyeonggi Provincial Government has commissioned the development of design guidelines for the walls of artificial structures,has instructed local governmentsagents to adopt these guidelines.

This ghastly underpassdark even during the day. Concrete walls have been damagedvandalism. It isa place for lone pedestrians to pass without feeling a certain amount of dread.
2) Artificial Structure Walls Design Guidelines
The Artificial Structure Wall Design Guidelines were developed to improve the appearance of the walls of artificial structures such as underpasses, tunnels, enclosed pedestrian passageways, retaining wallsbridges.

4) Underpass in Gwanggyo New Town, Suwon City
The walls of this underpass were constructed following the new guidelines. Concrete was replaced with wood,the passage was designed to improve the comfort of pedestrians enhancing harmony with the surroundings.
Gyeonggi Province will promote the application of these guidelines inprovincial districts.
Title 5. First Anniversary of the Gyeonggi Children’s Museum (0927-2)

The Gyeonggi Children’s Museum marked its first anniversary. It has been rapidly gaining popularity among children since its opening last September.

This museum recorded 100,000 visitors in just 40 days following its opening. As of June this year, a total of 330,000 children have visited this facility, which has also been recognized as a model children’s museum.

5) Museum Targets 700,000 Annual Visitors
To gain such official international recognition, a museum must attract at least 700,000 visitors annually, whichnow this museum’s target.

Title 6. Art & Music Donation Concert (0924-2)

An unusual piano concert was held at the Gyeonggi Arts Center. Everything that comprised this concert was donated,even the five pianos were donated for those who need them.

A renowned Korean pianist played at a special concert at the Gyeonggi Arts Center. Another piano stage was set up outside upon which pianists played the colorful pianos. These pianos were paintedfamous Korean artists. Both pianistsartists participated in this concert, which was organized as a talent donation event.

“It isoften that so many artists gather together at a concert. They are creating social harmony through a medium, whichmusic.”
All the pianos at this concert were donated to this event. They are playedfamous musicianspaintedfamous artists. They will then be donated again to those in need of them.

The Gyeonggi Arts Center plans to organize more talent donation events such as this concert.

Title 7. Artificial Reefs (0926-3)

Climatic changecontamination areserious effects on the offshore ecotems of Korea. In order to provide sustainable habitats for marine species, Gyeonggi Province has been installing artificial reefs in its offshore waters.

The oceanic environmentchanging rapidly throughout the world. Korea isan exception.
1) Korean Fish Hauls ReducedOceanic Environment Changes
Continued climatic changecontamination as well as the construction of large sea wallsembankments have resulted in the loss of habitatsspawning grounds for fish in the seas surrounding Korea. Rising sea water temperatures are pushing fish further north to unfriendly territories. Fish populations have ped sharplyfish hauls have decreased.

“The construction of Shihwa LakeHwahong Lake deprived fish of their spawning grounds. After their construction, fishing hauls ped considerably.”
3) Reefs, an Artificial Habitat
Since Gyeonggi Province started the installation of artificial reefs, some fish have begun to return. Placed on the seabed 10 to 50 m underwater, these man-made structures provides fish with shelter as well as spawning grounds. They also slow ocean currents, attracting a proliferation of coralssea weeds, which, in turn, revive sustainable environments for fish.

“There are now many steel structures with plenty of niches in which fish can shelterspawn in the offshore areas of Gyeonggi Province. Schools of small fish can live there quite comfortably.”
Since these artificial underwater ecotems are deemd to have contributed to a recent increase in fish hauls, there has been growing demand for them among fishing communities.
5) [INTERVIEW] Lee Jin-chan / Director General of the Gyeonggi Province Agricultural Budreau
“After the installation of artificial fish reefs in Gyeonggi Bay, fish hauls increased 2.7 times on average around the bay. One area saw a 6.3-fold increase”
To date, 30% of Gyeonggi’s offshore areas have been equipped with either steel or concrete artificial reefs. The Gyeonggi Provincial Government plans to expand such installations on an annual basis.
