Title 1. Contents Bus of Imagination Visits DMZ Village (0529-3)

The ‘Contents Bus of Imagination’ – loaded with digital contents equipment –operatedthe Gyeonggi Digital Contents Agency for the purpose of sharing culturaleducational contents with residents in remote areas. This high-tech bus visited a primary school in Tongilchon (통일촌), or the Reunification Village, a symbolically named village in Paju (파주) City beyond the Civilian Control Linejust south of the Korean De-militarized Zone.

The 40 children that comprise the entire student body of this primary school are excited about the arrival of the Contents Bus of Imagination. Some children are trying the smart equipment others are immersed in functional games. These games are designed to help children learn various subjects such as Chinese characters.

This visiting Bus of Imagination, or Sangsang (상상) Bus in Korean, circulates throughout Gyeonggi Provinceprovides educational services through its onboard digital contents equipment.

There was also a special lecture to nurture imaginationdreams among children. The experienced lecturer Kim Jongseok (김종석), nicknamed ‘Handy Dad’, kept children laughingthe way through his witty presentation.
4) Bus of Imagination Reduces Information Gap
Since travel across the Civilian Control Lineregulated for security reasons, residents in the areas beyond this line are culturallysocially isolated,their children have far fewer opportunities to become familiar with digital informationtechnologies.

“The digital contents for children are designed to cultivate their imagination, creativenessemotional development. The purpose of the Sangsang Busto help children experiencebecome familiar with such contents. We plan to make at least 100 visits a year to children in isolated regions.”
The Gyeonggi Digital Contents Agency plans to expand its sharing activitiesidentifying quality contents developed in the private sectorsupporting their utilization.

Title 2. Quit Smoking CampaignGyeonggi Province (0531-3)

May 31st marked the 25th World No Tobacco Day dthe member states of the World Health Organization. On this international occasion, Gyeonggi Province launched an active anti-smoking campaign to encourage voluntary abstinencesmoking.

Kim In-hwan (김인환) was a heavy smoker, but it has been nearly a year since he quit smoking with the help of the non-smoking clinic at the local public health center.

One of the middle schools designatedGyeonggi Province as a Smoking Prevention Model School held an Anti-smoking Declaration Ceremony so as to encourage voluntary participationstudents in abstinencesmokingto a tobacco-free school.

“This campaign, organized jointlythe schoolthe public health center, gave us an opportunity to become clearly aware of how bad smokingfor our health. I hope that students stop smoking for their health.”
In line with global observation of the 25th World No Tobacco Day, Gyeonggi Province launched a non-smoking campaign through local health centers, distributed leafletspublicized the dangers of smoking.

“We distributed posters that say ‘No Smoking Is Basic in Public Areas” on World No Tobacco Dayconducted an anti-smoking campaign indistricts of the province. We have been endeavoring to lower the smoking rate by, for example, designating no-smoking areas.”
Gyeonggi Province will continue to implement educationalpromotional anti-smoking programsprovide smokers with support in their non-smoking efforts so as to reduce the provincial smoking rate below the current 24.9%.

Title 3. On-site Experiential Program for Environment Officials (0601-3)

Gyeonggi Province introduced an on-site program for its environment officials. Under this program, environment-related officials of Gyeonggi Province participate in the activities of private companies so as to gain hands-on experiencelearn about work-site realities.

Workers at this food company are busy cleaning a water purification facilitytesting samples to evaluate the performance of the equipment. These workers, who are braving harsh conditions made worsefoul odorsdeafening noise, areemployees of this company but instead environment officials of Gyeonggi Province.
They joined the work force of this company, whichsubject to their supervisioninspection, to better understand the on-site situationexperiencing the difficulties themselves.

“We arethumbshaving a hard time doing things unfamiliar to us. But I think thisa good opportunity for us to better understand the situations facedprivate enterprises.”
Thisa far cryusual scenes in which environment officials assume an air of authority performing inspections. Private enterprises have welcomed this new policy.
3) Song Yong-hoon / Assistant Manager, XX Foods
“Ita little awkward to see these officials, who used to visit our company to see thereanything wrong, work sideside with us. I hope that they will understand us better through today’s experience.”
This experiential program was devisedthe Gyeonggi Province Industrial Complex Environment Management Office so as to study the on-site issues of private enterprises in the field of environmental purificationto use this knowledge in policy formation.

5) Better Communication through On-site Experience
This program will be implemented initially at 20 private enterprises as pilot cases. Based on the results of the initial implementation, Gyeonggi Province plans to expand this program so as to improve provincial policies through strengthened communication between the publicprivate sectors.

Title 4. Gyeonggi Child Psychotherapy Center Opens (0529-1)

Children who are placed in child welfare facilities due to abuse or neglect are more vulnerable to psychological damagein greater need of therapeutic services than children in traditional families. However, there are few such services for these children; accordingly, the Gyeonggi Child Psychotherapy Center was established.

There are a total of 1,800 children currently under the care of child welfare facilities in Gyeonggi Province

Children whoup living in child welfare facilities are those who were abandoned, neglected, or abused. They are under severe psychological strain, but there are virtually no psychotherapy services for them. Child welfare facilities can only provide basic care,the psychological injuries of these children are often left untreated.

The Gyeonggi Child Psychotherapy Center that opened in Anyang (안양) City will provide psychological treatment as well as regular education for up to one year to children who are living in child welfare facilitiesdisplay abnormal behavior. Gyeonggi Province expects that this center will be able to meet the psycho-therapeutic needs of such children.

The Korea International Boat Show that closed on June 3rd saw some of its largest exhibitions to datefeatured many high-end boatsmore overseas manufacturers than on previous occasions.

This 10 meter-long sailboatSpain made its Korean debut at this year’s show. Its maximum speed27 knots, whichequivalent to 50 kilometers an hour on land,it has an 8-person capacity. Priced in the range of KRW300 million, itrecommended for long-distance sailing.

There were significantly more items displayed both on landon the water this year including sailboats, kayaksother marine leisure equipment.

A total of 350 manufacturers34 countries participated in this year’s Korea International Boat Show, exhibitingkinds of marine leisure equipment including a number of boats of high-end brands.

When the qualification round of the 2012 Korea Match Cup of the World Match Racing Tour concluded, a Korean team was unfortunatelyamong the eight finalists. However, it was considered a good learning experiencethe Korean participants.

All 12 teams completed the course in the qualification round for the Korea Match Cup semi-finals.

When 66 races were completed, the New Zealand team ledPhil Robertson scored the highest with 9 points, qualifying for a place in the 8-team semi-finals.
3) Korean Teams Fail to Qualify
Two Korean teams, ledKim Tae-jeong (김태정)Park Byeong-gi (박병기), both failed to qualify for the finals. However, the Korean participants, especially Kim Tae-jeong (김태정)’s team, were satisfied to have been able to compete effectively with some of the world’s top-ranked teams.

This year’s Korea Match Cup featured fierce competition among some of the world’s highest ranked sailors including Ian Williams of the UK.

After the semi-finals, four finalists competed on June 3rd. The Swedish team, ledBjorn Hansen, finally secured the winner’s cup for the second time in two consecutive years, together with a prize purse of approximately KRW75 million.
