“We developed our market in Korea entirely on our own, but we were unable to expand our markets overseas due to a lack of resources. The UT System provided us with a breakthrough,we are now actively engaged in a business project with a US company.
The Gyeonggi-UT Business Support Program was launched in 2008 for the purpose of providing smallmedium-sized companies in Gyeonggi Province with US market development support through the industrial information tem of the University of Texas at Austin. So far, 51 companies have been ed for this support,USD 65 million in export sales – which equates to the creation of 77 new jobs – has been realized through the UT tem.

Fire safety education for public officials was provided at the Gyeonggi Province Fire Service Academy. This experiential education program was designed to prepare provincial officials for emergency situations.

This fire service academywhere new recruits learn firefightingemergency rescue skills. Trainees in full gear are spraying water. They participate in a variety of experiential classes such as heatsmoke exposureCPR. Many food products made with Gyeonggi Province rice have recently been introduced in the Korean market. Some of these products will soon find their way overseas since free trade agreements are gradually opening overseas markets for them. This will substantially alleviate the marketing problems of agricultural product manufacturersfarmers.

These cookies are made to order for the Starbucks coffeehouse chain.
2) First Gyeonggi Province – Starbucks MOU Signed in 2007
The relationship between Gyeonggi ProvinceStarbucks began in 2007 when an MOU was signed between them for the developmentsupply of rice cakes. The items supplied have since diversified to rice bars in 2010mixed fruit this year. This new cookie varietycurrently sold in 400 Starbucks outlets nationwide.
The next step for the producer of these cookiesto diversify the customer base, including overseas markets

4) Second Gyeonggi Province – Starbucks MOU Signed in 2007 (March 13th)
Gyeonggi ProvinceStarbucks have signed a second MOU for the development of Gyeonggi rice products. Starbucks has been cooperating with Gyeonggi Province in its endeavors to improve the competitiveness of the local agricultural industry.
5) Rice Cookies to Be Sold at Overseas Starbucks Outlets
The core of this MOUthat both parties will endeavor to introduce Gyeonggi rice cookies via overseas Starbucks outlets. Starbucks Korea plans to introduce these cookies initially to its Asian counterparts, including Starbucks China,gradually expand to worldwide outlets.

In addition to the rice industry, the Gyeonggi Provincial Government also plans to devise supporting programs in cooperation with large enterprises for other industrial fields that may face difficulties coping with the effectuation of FTAs so as to help these industries improve their competitiveness.

Title 4. Extensive Farm Support Policy of Gyeonggi Province in Wake of the Korea-US FTA (0314-2)

The Korea-US FTA finally took effect. The Korean industrial segment hardest hitthis particular FTA will be the agricultural industry. Gyeonggi Province announced a comprehensive policy that was specifically designed to help provincial farmers cope with the effectuation of the Korea-US FTA.

1) Hyunju Korean Cow Ranch
Thisa livestock farm in Pyeongtaek (평택) City. This farm has 75 cows in its cattle sheds which were rebuilt three years ago with financial support providedthe Korean government. “Nobody will ever understand our situation unless they are in our shoes. Cow farming isn’tvegetable farming or common businessesyou have a daily return. It takes us at least 24 months to grow a cow before itshipped.”
Following the effectuation of the Korea-US FTA on March 15th, a day dreadedKorean farmers, the Gyeonggi Provincial Government announced a comprehensive support policy for farmers including livestock farmers. The main focus of this policythe improvement of qualitycompetitiveness. According to this policy, the proportion of class 1 Korean beef will be raisedthe current 60% to 80%2017,quality improvement projects will be implemented with 54 vegetable-producing associations.
3) MOU for Promotion of AgriculturalLivestock Product Consumption / Pyeongtaek Agricultural TechnologyExtension Center (March 13th)
Gyeonggi Province also secured cooperationseven large enterprises based in the province, including Samsung ElectronicsLG Electronics, for the priority purchase of Gyeonggi agricultural products.

CG1) According to the newly announced farm support policy, the rejection rate for agricultural products will be brought down to 0%,34 agriculturallivestock products including beefpork will be subjected to advance inspections before shipmentfarms
CG2) G-Mark certified products will be endorsedGyeonggi Provincebacked upindemnification of up to KRW1 billion should any product fail quality inspection. The number of farm households with an annual income of over KRW 100 million will be increased to 20,000.
Such an ambitious policy may add pressure to farmers but they will benefitit in the long run, whichits ultimate purpose. Hopefully this extensive farm support policy will turn the challenge broughtFTAs into an opportunity for the reformation of the domestic agricultural industry.

Title 5. Childcare Facilities in Industrial Complexes (0312-2)

Demand for childcare facilitiesincreasing as there are an increasing number of working mothers. Since many of these working mothers are concentrated in industrial complexes, Gyeonggi Province plans to establish more than half of the new childcare facilities planned for this year in the industrial parks of the province.

For women workers in the Shihwa (시화) Industrial Complex of Shiheung (시흥) City, finding a childcare facility for their young childrena serious problem.
2) Industrial Complex Children’s Home / Shiheung City
An industrial complex childcare facility, as itcalled to differentiate it for its location, may seem somewhat misplaced in the middle of grey industrial buildings. But the demand for such facilitieshigher here than anywhere else, since itmuch more challenging for women workers in an industrial complex to bring their children tofrom outside childcare facilities.

“Unlike other public childcare facilities, these facilities give priority to workers in the industrial complex. Their services levelsfees are similar to those of public childcare facilities.”

Twenty-five new public childcare facilities are scheduled to be openedGyeonggi Province this year.

5) 18 New Public Children’s Homes to Be Opened in Industrial Complexes
Of these new public childcare facilities, 18 are slated for establishment in industrial complexes.
6) 15 Additional Workplace Children’s Homes to Be Established This Year
In addition to the new public childcare facilities in industrial complexes, 15 public childcare facilities will also be established in individual workplaces with more than 500 employees, which will bring the total number of workplace childcare facilities to 120. The first public childcare facility in a workplace opened to a very favorable response in Hynix Semiconductor in Icheon (이천) City in 2010.
Childcare facilities in industrial complexesworkplaces will also have the effect of encouraging working women to have children.

A team of menbusy disinfecting this market area to prevent the spread of bird flu. Unlike foot-and-mouth disease, thereno bird flu vaccine,so the prevention of bird flu depends solely on the disinfection of risk areas. The special disinfection team will visitprevious onset sites as well as traditional markets to disinfect the areas.
3) Bird Flu Early Warning Team Patrols in Mobile Diagnosis Vehicle
An AI Early Warning Team has also been mobilized to continuously monitor the situation via a mobile diagnosis vehicle. Koreaon full alert since cases of avian influenza have already been reported in South Chungcheong (충청) Province,migratory birds are expected to arrive in Korea next monthSoutheast Asian countries including TaiwanHong Kongbird flu outbreaks have repeatedly occurred.
The Special AI Inspection Team, consisting of the Disinfection Teamthe AI Early Warning Team, were organizedare operatedthe Gyeonggi Veterinary Service, which plans to preemptbird flu risks so as to completely eliminate the possibility of its onset.
4) Kim Jong-hoon / Livestock Animal Disease Prevention Team Leader of Gyeonggi Veterinary Service
“We have already started working on the elimination of risk factorsoperating the Special AI Inspection Team.”
The Gyeonggi Veterinary Service also plans to visit poultry farms to provide disinfection support.
