Title 1. Employment Support Program for Discharged Soldiers (0319-2)

Gyeonggi Province has been providing employment support for discharged soldiers. After several years of absencecivilian life, veterans are finding it difficult to gain employment. Last year, 74% of the participants successfully found employment through this program.

1) Employment Rate of Discharged Long-term Soldiers: 53.2%
The employment rate of former military officers with more than 10 years of service experience in Korea53.2%, far below the 90% level of most advanced countries. Korean veterans have been in dire need of employment support.
2) 2012 Employment Education for Veterans / Gyeonggi Small & Medium Business Center (March 18th)
The first Employment Education for Veterans opened at the Gyeonggi Small & Medium Business Center as part of the Employment Support Program for Veterans.

During this 4-week training program, former soldiers will participate in individualgroup interviews with potential employers as well as on-site training. Support of up to KRW 4.8 million will be paid to the participating companies for each veteran so as to promote internship opportunities for them. Intensive employment placement support will then be provided in the final stage.
3) Bae Han-il / Welfare Employment Team Leader of Gyeonggi Employment Center
“We are providing the discharged soldiers with three-stage support to help them successfully reposition in society.”
4) 74% Participants Found Employment in 2011
The Employment Support Program of Gyeonggi Provincethe first of its kind to have been launcheda local government in Korea,it generated very successful results last year, achieving a 74% employment rate.
Gyeonggi Province has set aside a total of KRW 200 million for this program,targeted the employment of 120 discharged soldiers this year.

Title 2. Closed Mine Turns into Tourist Attraction (0321-1)

Calico in the US state of Californiaan old Western mining settlement; itfamous for its ghost townthe 500 silver mines that closed at the beginning of the 20th century. It has now become a popular tourist attraction. A Korean version of the Calico minebeing developed in Gwangmyeong (광명) City. Our reporter was there.

The Gahak (가학) Mine, an old gold mine in Gwangmyeong (광명) City, has been abandoned for the past 40 years, but a large cavern at this once busy excavation site has been transformed into a natural underground performance hall.
2) 10,000 Visitors to Gahak Mine since August 2011
Possessing an eerie atmosphereinspiring a sense of the oldsurreal, this unique place has attracted 10,000 visitors since August of last year. The large number of visitors over such a short period of timedue in part to its close proximity to surrounding cities.

Located only 30 minutes awayKTX Gwangmyeong (광명) StationIncheon (인천) International Airport, the Gahak (가학) Mineeasily accessedday visitorsdensely populated areas.
4) MOU for Gahak Mine Development / Gahak Mine (March 20th)
Taking advantage of its accessibility, Gyeonggi Province, Gwangmyeong Citythe Gyeonggi Tourism Organization signed an MOU for the development of the Gahak (가학) Mine as a natural tourist attraction.
5) Gyeonggi Province Governor Kim Moon-soo
“The Gahak Mine will be developed into an eco-friendly tourist attraction. It will benefitits great accessibility to urban areaswill contribute to the local economy as well.”
6) Rail Bike, 4D Cinema, Performance Hall to Be Built
Over 50 smalllarge underground galleries of up to 1,000 square meters as well as mining routes will be used to accommodate an underground rail bike, 4D movie theatera performance hall. Some of the smaller pits will even be used as cellars for winefermented food products. A total of KRW 100 billion will be invested in the development of this mine-turned-recreational-site.
Gyeonggi ProvinceGwangmyeong City will work together to open the site2020. As the sizable budget suggests, it will be a large-scale recreationalcultural development with the prospect of substantially contributing to the local economy.

Title 3. Water Cleaning Begins in Paldang Watershed (0319-1)

The tributaries of Paldang Lake are important for the maintenance of the quality of Paldang (팔당) water, whichused as a water sourcemillions of people inaround Seoul. With ice covers thawing, these creeksstreams have become vulnerable to contamination. Gyeonggi Province has begun extensive Paldang (팔당) watershed cleaning work.

1) Gyeongan Stream
Thisthe Gyeongan (경안) Stream, one of the largest tributaries of the Han (한) River. As you can see, a large amount of garbagefloating on the water,some of itensnaredtree trunks, creating unsightly scenes. Waste thrown carelessly on the iceother garbage trappedice upstream during the winternow freewashes up on the banks as ice melts. Everywhere along the edge of the waterpacked with such wastegarbage.
2) Extensive Paldang Water Cleaning Begins (March 16th)
Itan annual phenomenon,this year was no exception. The authority has now mobilized five water-cleaning vessels350 workers to clean up the Paldang (팔당) watershed.

According to the Gyeonggi Province Paldang (팔당) Water Quality Improvement Headquarters, the amount of garbage collected in this area over the past ten years amounts to almost 14,000 tons.
3) Cleaning Work on Landin Water 4-5 Times a Year
Large-scale cleaning initiatives are carried out on landin the water five to six times every year, but therea steady influx of waste because of careless garbage disposal along many water routes upstream.

“Many people cast household garbagewaste into small streamsalong banks. The amount of garbage we have to collect here would be very much reduced it they changed their behavior.”
The Gyeonggi Province Paldang (팔당) Water Quality Improvement Headquarters began cleaning work as soon as the ice thawed,the work will continue on on-going basis.

“Even household garbage isdirectly disposed of in the water, it will decaycontaminate the water in the end. We will do everything we can to keep the 15 major tributaries around the Paldang shed clean.”
Cleaning may provide a solution to water contamination, but most importantly, people should be encouraged to dispose of garbage properlyto reduce the amount of household waste.

An emergency agricultural support service was openedthe Gyeonggi Province Agricultural ResearchExtension Services. This support service aims to provide farmers with solutions or assistance in the event of agricultural emergencies.

1) Hyewon Farm / Suwon City
Hong Jeom-pyo (홍점표) has been growing black tomatoes in his greenhouses throughout the winter, but his heart almost broke when he found his tomato leaves were withering.
2) Gyeonggi Agriculture 119 Rescued Hong’s Tomatoes
Without knowing what to do, Hong called the Gyeonggi Agriculture 119 hotline. A consulting team then visited his farmfound that grey mold was the culprit.

“Just on-site diagnosis can be a tremendous help, because we then know what to do.”
Grey mold causes grey mold rot,the infected plants slowly witherthe fruit decays. Without appropriate remedies, damage will spread.

Title 5. 10 Green Growth Projects of 2012 (0321-1)

The Gyeonggi Provincial Government held the 6th Provincial Green Growth Committee Meeting. During this meeting, the results of last year’s projects were reviewednew projects for this year were finalizedannounced. A total of 10 green growth projects were announced.

The ten green growth projects for this year include the GTX project, the G-rain Housing Pilot Projectthe Green All Project. The GTX Metropolitan Railroad Project, in particular, will have the greatest ripple effects of reducing carbon emissions1.5 million tons per yearsaving residents annual transportation costs of KRW 660 billion.

The tee meeting agenda also included the review of the 10 green growth projects. In connection with these projects, the tee also decided on 122 green growth targets.

Among last year’s green growth projects, the introduction of the Carbon Emission Transaction Pilot Projectthe Carbon Point System were considered successful. On the other hand, the delay in cooperative communication with the central governmentthe stoppage of a project due to a lack of central government financial support were considered less successful.
Some of last year’s 129 targets, which were unsuccessful or withheld due to uncontrollable causes, were excludedthis year’s target setting. During the tee meeting, questions regarding detailed implementation plans for climatic change countermeasures were also asked.
Gyeonggi Province will implement the extensive promotion of provincial green growth projects so as to enable residents to recognize the projectstheir effects more readily.

Title 6. First Movie Theater in Daeseong-dong Village in DMZ Opens (0320-2)

The first movie theater in the Korean De-Militarized Zone has opened. This movie theaterlocated in Daeseong-dong (대성동), a community of South Koreans only 800 metersthe border with North Korea. Being in the DMZ, a specially designated zone controlledmilitary forces, travel inout of the areavillagers as well as outside civilians has been strictly controlled,villagers find it very difficult to do even simple things such as going to a movie.

1) Daeseong-dong, Paju City (March 19th)
Daeseong-dong (대성동)the south Korean village closest to North Korea. Though technically a part of Paju (파주) City in Gyeonggi Province, itinside the southern half of the DMZ.
2) Travel Restriction Deprived Villagers of Cultural Access
There are a total of 212 residents in 49 households, mostly farm households, in Daeseong-dong (대성동). They are living virtually devoid of any opportunities for cultural events.

“I have been living here since the Korean War. The only means of travel isa service vehicle that visits the village three times a day. When we go out, we should come back6 pm at the latest.”
4) 2nd Floor of Community House Transformed into 52-seat “First-run Cinema”
Gyeonggi ProvinceLotte Cinema opened a movie theater with 52 seats on the second floor of the Community House of this village. This movie theatera first-run cinema featuring new movies.

7) Free Film Showing Twice a Month
The Daeseong-dong (대성동) Cinema will feature new movies twice a month free of charge for villagers, the first movie being “The Introduction to Architecture”, a Korean movie released on March 22nd.

“We are very grateful. I am glad we can have a real cinema in our village.”
Gyeonggi ProvinceLotte Cinema signed an MOU for the continuous supply of new movies to the Daeseong-dong (대성동) First-run Cinema. This new cinema in Daeseong-dong (대성동) Village will be a big step in the improvement of cultural welfare for the villagers.
