The third Beauty Design Expo, or BEAUDEX, was held at KINTEX in Goyang (고양) City. This national exhibition of beauty artcosmetic treatments has been sponsoredGyeonggi Province since its inception with the objective of promoting the beauty industry as a future growth industry.

The Beauty Design Expoa comprehensive exposition of beauty artproductsis the largest event of its kind in Korea. Italso an internationally recognized event consisting of a variety of elements such as hair shows, beauty art performancespromotional exhibitions.

The hair shows of famous designers were the highlights of the event, attracting the interest of a large number of spectators. Each year, BEADEX draws more visitorsaround the country as well asabroad.

This year’s event also included beauty contests in eight categoriessaw the participation of specialists fromareas of the beauty industry including hair designers, nail artists, skincare specialists, makeup artistseven wig specialists.

Title 2. Artistic Talent Donation Project (1031-1)

‘Talent Donation’a new term used in Korea to describe the sharing of skills or know-howindividuals or private organizations such as companies for the benefit of society. One such endeavorthe Artistic Talent Donation Project, a cultural sharing project devisedthe Gyeonggi Art Center. Members of participating organizations donate their timeresources to provide artistic educationlessons to those who have limited access to such activities.

Choi Jae-e (최재이) lives with her grandfatheris his sole source of support. She never dreamed of learning how to play any musical instrument. Before she began trumpet lessons three weeks ago, thanks to the Artistic Talent Donation Project, no one knew she had such amazing musical talent.

Shestill living in a very disadvantaged situation, buther life’s difficultiessad memories are forgotten when she plays the trumpet.

“I’ve been wanting to learn how to play a trumpet,I’m very happy to be able to do it now.”
It was the Gyeonggi Philharmonic Orchestra that has given her the hope of musicdonating a trumpetproviding free lessons.
3) Artistic Talent Donation Project
50 boysgirls who are either child household heads or in low-income bracket families were edthis orchestraprovided with free music lessons once a week. These students also received donated musical instruments through the Gyeonggi Art Center.

The Gyeonggi Art Center plans to expand implementation of the Art Talent Donation Project to encompass a wider range of individuals.

Title 3. Experiential Education on Historical Figures (1101-1)

Historyusually taught through textbook-based classroom lecturesvisits to historical sites. But therean interesting history education program, entitled “Historical Figures Experiential Education,” in which students learn about historical eventsvisiting the actual scene of the eventseeing historical figures. One such program, “If I were Injo (인조)”,offered at Namhansanseong (남한산성), the historic mountain fortress in Gyeonggi Province.

1) Namhansanseong, Gwangju City
Namhansanseong (남한산성) has seen some of Korea’s darkest historical events. In 1636, King Injo (인조) of the Choseon (조선) Dynasty took refuge in this fortress when a hundred-thousand-strong army of the Chinese Ching Dynasty invaded the Korean Peninsula. The courtiers were divided to two factions, one favoring a peace treaty with Ching under sovereign-and-subject relations as demandedthe Ching,the other resisting it. The conflict between the two factions added the suffering of Injo (인조). Students participating in or watching the play reenacting the scene at Namhansanseong (남한산성) feel the agony of Injo (인조) as it was their own.

Children are deep in their own thoughts, contemplating what they would have done to save the kingdomits people, trying to answer the question, “What would I have done I were Injo (인조)?”
5) Historical Figure Experiential Education, “If I were Injo”/ Namhansanseong
The education program “If I were Injo (인조)”currently being offered at Namhansanseong (남한산성) with the aim of providing students with history education through first-hand experiences at the historical scene with historical figures.
6) Experiencing History in a Historical Play
Students participating in this unique education program feel much closer to history watching the scene unfold as they were actually there.

“It washaving a picnic to come to Namhansanseong,I had a memorable experience because I watched a playtook my turn in it, too”

“I heard that we are trying to have Namhansanseong registered as a World Cultural Heritage Site with UNESCO in 2014. I hope that I can help to realize this.”
This “If I were Injo (인조)” program began in September for primary school students in Gyeonggi Province. It received such a favorable response that the organizer extended its operation until November.

Title 4. Fungi-eating Insect (1031-2)

Pest-eating insects have been used for some time as an environment-friendly agricultural technique. But the use of fungi-eating insects was first developed in Korea to control the spread of powdery mildew.

The leaves of these cucumber plants are covered with a white powdery substance. They are infected with powdery mildew. Ita fungal disease that affects a wide range of plants, especially cucumberpepper,causes serious concern among farmers because it devastates vegetable yields.

2) Development of Powdery Mildew-eating Insect
For the first time in Korea, the Gyeonggi Agricultural ResearchExtension Services developed a technique to control powdery mildew using its natural enemy, insects”
3) Yellow Ladybirds
The natural enemies of powdery mildew are yellow ladybirds. Yellow ladybirds eat powdery mildew fungiscraping them off the leaves of cucumber plants without damaging the leaves.
4) Both LarvaeAdult Insects Eat Powdery Mildew Fungi
Unlike other ladybird species that eat aphids, these yellow ladybirds, both in their larvaeadult stages, thrive on powdery mildew fungi. The Gyeonggi Agricultural ResearchExtension Services developed a year-round yellow ladybird breeding techniqueplans to further develop a mass breeding technique to make these insects available to farmers at a low cost.

“We began studying to develop a new powdery mildew control technique using its natural enemy instead of pesticides.”
The Gyeonggi Agricultural ResearchExtension Services also plans to develop other insect production techniques for various applications in environment-friendly farming.

Title 6. Korean Government Includes GTX Projects in Feasibility Study (1102-1)

The GTX Metropolitan Express Railway Project of Gyeonggi Province was ed as one of the subject projects for preliminary feasibility studythe Korean government. This signifies a positive outlook for the early commencement of GTX construction. The Gyeonggi Provincial Government reaffirms that it will make multilateral efforts for the stable implementation of the GTX Project.

Gyeonggi Province continues to actively pursue the implementation of the GTX Project so as to proceed in accordance with the original schedule.

Gyeonggi Province signed an MOU with the Korea Railroad Research Institute for the developmentsupply of technologies for the construction of GTX as well as for cooperation in the cultivation of specialists for the advancement of the railroad industry in general. The Korea Railroad Research Institute possesses world-class railroad technologies in Korean-type high-speed trainstilting carriages as well as lightweight electric railroad tems.
