1. Industrial Professionals of Gyeonggi Province: Driving Force of the Nation’s Industrial Competitiveness

The repeating occurrences of car manufacturer recalls – such as Toyota’s massive recall earlier this yearHyundai Motor Company’s voluntary recall – have compelled domestic enterprises to undertake quality improvement activities. Some of the industrial professionals who have contributed to quality improvement in their fields met together.

These gentlemen are members of the Quality Improvement Team of Hynix Semiconductor Inc. who had won the gold medal in the 36th National Quality Teams Contest. They have continuously been working on 6-sigma activities since long before this contest that recognized their efforts. The 6-sigma activities of Hynix Semiconductor have been focusing on minimizing defects in the memory production process.

Other s of qualitysmall, mediumlarge companies in Gyeonggi Province were also present at the event. Gyeonggi Province Governor Kim Moon-Soo (김문수) offered words of encouragementpraise to these quality contributors who have worked devotedly for the improvement of quality in their respective fields. Gyeonggi Province has been providing the companies in the province with support for quality managementimprovement since 2009.

2. Concert for Pregnant WomenUnborn Babies

A stimulating musical concert was held at the Aramnuri (아람누리) Cultural Center in Goyang (고양) City on October 16th. It was a concert for both pregnant womentheir unborn babies.

There was a concert for womentheir families in Gyeonggi Province.

Many Koreans believe that musicgood for the prenatal education, or Taegyo (태교), of unborn babies. A variety of Taegyo (태교) music including familiar tunesfilm scores were played at the concert for pregnant women, who greatly appreciated the performance.

This Gyeonggi Mom’s Love Concert was the second such occasion through which pregnant womentheir families could enjoy quality music. The concert, which was organizedGyeonggi Province, also aimed at promoting various childbirth support policies of the province.

Gyeonggi Province will continue to provide support for childbirthchildcare including preferential treatment of childbearing female provincial officials, 24-hour childcare facilitiesthe Children’s Anshim (안심) School services.

3. Housing Support to Be Added to “Go for it Sergeant Kim!” Project

Gyeonggi Province has been implementing the “Go for it, Sergeant Kim!” project with various support programs for discharged military personnel. Following the veterans employment support agreement that was concluded last month, the provincial government has also decided to provide the families of soldiers who were incapacitated or killed in the line of duty with special housing opportunities.

The launch of the “Go for it, Sergeant Kim!” project was one of the campaign pledges made during the 5th popular election. This projectabout to receive further impetus for its growth as a full-fledged project as the province plans to incorporate another special program.

The “Go for it, Sergeant Kim!” project includes a variety of support programs for discharged military personnel such as the operation of a manpower bank, one-on-one customized employment placementsupport for the establishment of in-camp libraries.

Last month, Gyeonggi Province opened exclusive employment desk for veterans at the Gyeonggi Employment Center. The province also introduced a housing support policy for casualties of acts of valorrevising its Housing Supply Rules.

According to the revised rules, the families of those wounded or killed in the line of duty will be entitled to a supply of housing of up to 85 square meters within a limit of 10% of the total housing supplies constructedthe government, local public corporations or private construction companies. A provincial official said that this revision of the Housing Supply Rules wouldonly promote social equality but would also help alleviate the housing problems of people in low income brackets.

There have been other occasions of special housing supply providedGyeonggi Province. A total of 156 families of workers who served more than five years at manufacturingforeign companies as well as the owners of Intangible Cultural Assets have been granted special housing since 2008.

4. Daon Village Happiness Learning Center

A Happiness Learning Center opened in Daon (다온) Village in Yeongcheon County (연천), Gyeonggi Province,the residents are the victims of Hansen’s Disease or leprosy who haven’t had appropriate educational opportunities.

A Happiness Learning Center opened in Daon (다온) Village – also known as Hansen Village – in Yeoncheon (연천) County. The residents of the village have been unable to share in social benefits such as education.

This Happiness Learning Center in Daon (다온) Villagethe second of its kind following the first in Janja (장자) Village in Pocheon (포천) City. The opening ceremony was precededthe “Visiting Concert of Hope” organizedGyeonggi Provincea speech of gratitudea village representative.

The residents of Jangja Village in Pocheon (포천) also visited Daon (다온) Village to offer congratulations on the opening of the Happiness Learning Center,the whole village celebrated in a festive mood.

The Gyeonggi Urban Innovation Corporation officially handed over the computers they donated to the village.

The Happiness Learning Center building, refurbishedthe previous village welfare centerdesigned for easy esidents, houses a computer rooma reading room.

The residents of Daon (다온) Village have never received any adult education opportunities, nor did the village possess any resources to a suitable learning environment. However, village residents are now expected to benefitthe establishment of this new Happiness Learning Center.

Gyeonggi Province plans to implement a variety of programs for the villagers to allow them to enjoy the pleasure of learningnurture self-sustained educational capabilities.

5. Agreements with Companies Entering Jeongok Marine Industrial Complex.

Gyeonggi Province entered agreements with companies that will establish operations in the Jeongok (전곡) Marine Industrial Complexis on track to lead the regional marine leisure industry.

Gyeonggi Province signed MOUs with companies for occupancy of the Jeongok (전곡) Marine Industry Complex that will lead the future development of the regional marine leisure industry.

The eight shipbuilding companies that participated in these agreements will invest a total of KRW 52.4 billion an estimated 251 jobs.

With the signing of these agreement, an area of 44.5 acres, which18.6% of the total 240 acres of the Jeongok (전곡) Marine Industry Complex,now ted to the participating companies which will invest a total of KRW 113 billion 647 jobs.

According to the schedule of the provincial government, special agreements for occupancy will be accepted up to theof Octoberapplications for general residency will beginNovember.

In order to support the companies with their occupation plans, Gyeonggi Province will provide extensive administrative support in approvalregistration formalities to allow them to start construction work2011.

Home to such high-tech industries as automobile manufacturingIT as well as a wide range of researchdevelopment, designplanning facilities in addition to the Jeongok Marine Industry Complex, Gyeonggi Provinceideally equipped for the development of the marine industry. Gyeonggi Province has a plan to jointly develop a Water Complex around Shiwha (시화) with the cities of Hwaseong (화성), Ansan (안산)Shiheung (시흥) to a mecca for marine leisuretourism.

6. Quality Products Made at Self-sufficiency Promotion Centers

There are 32 local Self-help Promotion Centers in Gyeonggi Province. The objective of these centersto allow economically underprivileged people to come together to producesell the products themselves. As part of active promotional support, Gyeonggi Province organized an exhibition in which the quality of the productsself-help centers was assesseddisplayed.

The Self-help product Exhibition was held on the central quad of the Gyeonggi Provincial Office Complex. A total of 21 local self-help promotion centers participated in the quality assessment meetingexhibition.

28 products in the four categories of food, handicrafts, household goodsindustrial products were introduced in the quality assessment meeting. A panel of seven judges carefully investigated each producttasted the food products.

The Grand Prize went to the Bucheon*Sosa (부천&소사) Self-help Promotion Center for the product ‘BreadPeople.’ This center will be awarded KRW 3 million to cover the costs of distribution consultation next year. Participantslocal self-help promotion centers were hopeful that this event would have promotional benefits for their products.

Also during this event, Gyeonggi Province, the Gyeonggi Chamber of Commerce, the Kyeongin (경인) Dailythe Korea Self-help Promotion Centers Association entered an agreement for the support of self-help centers in technical, economicalpromotional activities

Some of the products introduced at this exhibition were recognizedexperts for their excellent quality. When these products are provided with appropriate opportunities to be connected to consumers, they will help improve the economic well-being of the less affluent.

7. ‘Hand-in-Hand’ Festival of Multicultural Families

Multicultural familiesthe 31 citiescounties of Gyeonggi Province gathered on the sports ground of the Gyeonggi Provincial Office Complexspent a day pursuing a variety of enjoyments. There was a speech contest as well as activities at the world culture experiential hall.

Over 3000 members of multicultural families in Gyeonggi Province arrived at the provincial office complex. The multicultural festival began with traditional dances preparedforeign residentswere followeda variety of enjoyable events.

In the speech contest, childrenmulticultural families presented speeches in Koreanother parental languages about their lives in Korea.

In the World Culture Experiential Hall, visitors could try on the traditional attire of foreign countries. The World Food Hall was most popular among visitors.

The total number of foreign residents in Koreaestimated to be more than 1.14 million,29.7% of them live in Gyeonggi Province, thus forming the largest community of foreigners in the country. Among foreign residents, workers are the largest group, followedmarriage-based immigrantschildren of parents with foreign nationalities.

In order to help the increasing number of multicultural families adapt swiftly to their lives in Korea, Gyeonggi Province plans to establish support agencies for multicultural families in the cities with the largest concentrations of multicultural familieswill continue to listen to their voices.
