2.Prevention of Floods

In preparation for the upcoming monsoon season, Gyeonggi Province began working on countermeasures against possible flood damage to major large-scale projects currently underway along the Norththe South Han Rivers.

Gyeonggi Province held a Flood Disaster Prevention Meeting to protect the Han River Restoration Projects. The meeting was held at Work Section 5 of the Yeoju restoration site on May 27th.

A Gyeonggi Province official said that the purpose of the meeting was to share among the work sections the measures to be taken for the prevention of flood disastersfor safety management of material stocks as well as to discuss emergency rescue operation methods to be applied in the event of water-related accidents.

Gyeonggi Province held an Integrated Defense Working Committee Meeting to review the security status of the Korean Peninsuladiscuss measures to be taken to help strengthen regional defense.

With the increase in tensions between NorthSouth Korea following the sinking of the Republic of Korea Navy Ship Cheonan, Gyeonggi Province held an Integrated Defense Working Committee Meeting to review the preparedness of the Province for emergency situations.

The meeting was also attendedrepresentatives of the prosecution, police, National Intelligence Servicemilitary agencies. The main agenda of the meeting was to discuss measures that should be implemented to protect national infrastructure against possible terrorism.

Stressoverworkharmful to mental healthcan lead to depression or even suicide. The number of depressed individuals seeking treatment at mental health centers has grown recently.

Considering the urgent need for social means to safeguard against depression, Gyeonggi Province launched the ‘Little Princethe Village of Hope’ website through which anyone can self-diagnose depression conveniently at home.

A questionnaire with 19 questions allows the people with depression to diagnose the severity of their depression. Quizzes about suicideconsultation on depression will also help them to overcome their condition.

According to statistics, the total number of people who ted suicide in Korea in 2008 was 12,858, which was twice as many as 10 years agoalso the highest rate among OECD nations.

Gyeonggi Province has previously held seminars on the prevention of suicide especially for womensenior residents,is now actively involved in direct communication with depressed individuals through this suicide-prevention website.

5.Another Korean WaveGyeonggi Farm Produce

Nine companies8 countries who were invited to this promotional event signed MOUs worth a total value of KRW 7.1 billion to buy food itemsagricultural products produced in Gyeonggi Province.

The invited overseas buyers visited a food-processing company in Pocheonthe AgriculturalFishery Products Distribution Center in Goyang to see the quality of provincial products first hand.

The personnelthe company who invited overseas buyers for this event were hopeful about the outcomesaid that this event gave them opportunities to enter overseas markets.

6.Gyeonggi Province Plans Green All Project
