1. Preventing Cattle Diarrhea with `Vaccine Rice Plants`

Rice plants able to prevent diarrhea in cattle have been developed for the first time in the world after research done in Korea.

The Gyeonggi National Institute of Agricultural ScienceTechnology developed the first cattle diarrhea prevention vaccine rice plant ever after 6 years of research.

1 kilogram of rice seed contains about 10 milligrams of resistant genes.

In Korea, farmers losses due to bacterial cattle diarrhea totals $122 million a year.

Once the vaccine rice plants become commercialized Gyeonggi alone looks to reduce lossesabout $22.9 million a year.

Further, we expect this to be a good chance to provide consumers with safer food to eat as the vaccine can prevent misuse of antibiotics.

2. Wind Beneath Handicapped Wings

A support service for assistive technologywidespread in countries with advanced welfare policies. But, such services are lacking in Korea making it hard on many physically disabled. The Assistive Technology ResearchAssistance Centerpromoting a reuse program for devices much neededthe disabled.

Seong-eun waited for 4 months to lease a device that would fit. The costs are high due to a waiting list,for children have to purchase new devices to fit their growing bodies.

At present in Korea there are about 3,000 such devices in circulation in Korea. The Assistive Technology ResearchAssistance Center collects neglected devicesleases them to those in need.

Reused assistive devices are being promoted,an agreement was concluded with assistive device companieswelfare facilities for the disabled.

The reused assistive technology are provided for free to applicants after a consultationevaluationan assistive technology engineer for a custom fit.

3. Fire Department Given Special Award

Everyone calls 911 in case of an emergency. The Gyeonggi Fire Department with its quick service was recognized as a model of efficient budgeting.

Provincial Fire Headquarters was awarded a special award at the `local autonomy budgeting efficiency model presentation` on the 18th.

4. Title: Gyeonggi Province – Nonghyup Win-Win Agreement

This agreement signifies a strategic cooperation for the development of the Paldal Eco-friendly Co-op,the buildingmaintenance of the eco-friendly distribution center planned for 2011.

We expect a synergy to result as Gyeonggi Province develops eco-friendly farming through its natural organizational abilitycapital,Nonghyup developing the mountainous areas in the metropolitan areaspossessing a distribution hub.

The provinceNonghyup plan to contribute to the stabilization of eco-friendly farmers incomessupplying the metropolitan area, starting with Seoul, half of the eco-friendly crops it consumes.

Gyeonggi Provincesupporting 11 projects including establishing an eco-friendly distribution center, creating an eco-friendly farming belt,organic fertilizer totalling $34.2 million in support.

Gyeonggi Province,attracted the 2011 World Organic Congress plans to re itself as the center of organic farming in Korea.

5. Family Foster Care, Leads to Happiness

In North Gyeonggi about 700 children are living with 540 families under foster care.

Gyeonggi Province stated it would spare nothing in providing support to activate foster care for the children to grow up in a familytherewarmthlove.

6. Rice Cake for X-mas

The company has made over $428,000 in salesrice cakes; it buys rice directlya Pyeongtaek farmprocesses the rice into powder for the products.

Even though the rice products are 10~20% more expensive than similar products madewheat flour, the bakeryup to its ears in orders.

Moving awayits flagship traditional rice cake, the Gyeonggi Green & Agricultural Foundation decided to make an agreement with this company to activate the baking industry.

Gyeonggi Province plans to make close ties with processing companies in the province to opening the market to various processed rice productsboost consumption.

7. Infinite Care, Buddhists Lend a Hand

Civilian groups continue to participate in Gyeonggi`s infinite care project. This time Buddhists of one temple have pitched in for volunteer work.

Appointed `infinite caretakers` Bongseonsa Temple Buddhists are lending a hand to troubled neighborsare actively participating in the Infinite Care Project.

Before this, last July Buddhists formed an agreement with Gyeonggi Provincethe Infinite Care Projecthave been providing continual support for low income families in the province.

Also, the legal community, financial communityvarious others formed an agreement with the province to help.

The province has been a big help to those in crisis providing $30 million in aid to 28,000 families in the province including seniorsthe handicapped that have bore the brunt of the recession.

In the future, Gyeonggi Province plans to continue to provide support toresidents facing difficulty through forming various socialcommunity networks.
