Gyeonggi Province and DMZ Docs announced on February 7th that they will offer a lecture series entitled “Documentary Films: Looking for Theaters and Audiences” to popularize documentary films.

The lectures will be held at Mediact in Mapo-gu, Seoul, on Thursdays at 7:00 pm from February 23 to March 23.

The first and fifth lectures will be held as conversations where documentary filmmakers will share their filmmaking experiences with the participants.

In the second and fourth lectures, discussions will take place on the ways in which documentaries can be more accessible to audiences, including how to increase their showings in theaters.

The lecturers scheduled to participate are as follows: Gangyu Garam, director of the documentary films My Father’s House and Itaewon; Kim Cheol-min, representative of Docucow; Lee So-hyeon, director of Dear Grandma; Kim Il-gwon, representative of cinemaDAL, a documentary film distributing agency; and Go Yeong-jae, chief director of the Association of Korean Independent Film & Video and expert member of DMZ Docs.

The fee is KRW 20,000 for all five lectures or KRW 5,000 for each lecture.

Cho Jae-hyun, the chairman of DMZ Docs, said, “More than 100 Korean documentary films are produced each year, but just a few works can be viewed by audiences. I hope that this lecture series will help create an environment in which more documentary films find their way to audiences, and that it will serve as a forum where we find ways to break through these difficulties together.”

Meanwhile, the 9th DMZ Docs “The Window Looking at the World” will be held in Goyang City, Paju City, Gimpo City and Yeoncheon County from September 21 to 28.
