Gyeonggi Province announced on March 16 that it will operate its 1st “Gyeonggi-do Social Media Foreign Resident Reporters Program” and recruit participants so as to provide tailored information for foreign residents of the province via social media this year.

The Gyeonggi Social Media Foreign Resident Reporters Program is the first project to be promoted by the current provincial administration to provide opportunities for foreign residents to participate in the provincial government as members of the community.

The participants will report on various issues, such as major policies related to foreign residents in Korea, changing systems, counseling and support-related information, provincial government news, local festivals/events and real-time local news (e.g. traffic, disaster, weather), writing articles that will be released in Chinese, Vietnamese and Russian through blogs and other social media channels.

Foreign residents aged 18 or older who reside in Gyeonggi Province, are native speakers of Chinese, Vietnamese and Russian, can communicate in Korean, and have the ability to use social media (e.g. Facebook, blogs) are eligible to apply.

In return for articles written during their activities, manuscript fees will be paid and various benefits will be provided such as journalism training (how to write articles, latest social media trends, etc.) and field experience. Outstanding reporters will be awarded gubernatorial citations at the end of the year.

Foreign residents wishing to participate should download and complete the application form available from the Gyeonggi provincial website and submit it via email (ggforsns@naver.com) by March 25.

Gyeonggi Province will announce 30 finalists by the end of March after document screening and interviews. The selected reporters will undergo training and engage in related activities until the end of this year.

Hong Dong-gi, Director of Gyeonggi Province’s Foreign Resident Policy Division, said, “We expect that this reporters group will open up wider communication channels for foreign residents as part of the local society and our neighbors.” He added, “We will continue to find and implement projects so as to ensure the stable settlement of foreign residents.”
