Gyeonggi Province has established a historical and cultural park around ‘Heungwon,’ the Tomb of Heungseon Daewon, in Namyangju City and opened it to Gyeonggi residents.

Designated as Gyeonggi Monument No. 48 on October 10, 1978, Heungwon is the mausoleum of Heungseon Daewongun Lee Hae-ng, the father of Gojong, the 26th king of the Joseon Dynasty. It was built in Gongdeok-ri, Goyang-gun (now Gongdeok-dong, Seoul), after the death of Heungseon Daewongun, and relocated to Daedeok-ri, Paju-gun, in 1908. It was then moved to its present location at 22-2, Changhyeon-ri, Hwado-eup, Namyangju City, in 1966.

In 2018, Gyeonggi Province received a land donation of 126,903 square meters of Heungseon Daewongun Cemetery and the surrounding area from Mr. Lee Cheong, a fifth-generation descendant of Heungseon Daewongun; since 2021, the cemetery has been maintained with restrooms, parking lots, and paths. The perimeter path consists of four paths: Wind Path, Sasak Path, Seokpa Path, and Sori Path.

In the future, Gyeonggi Province will conduct academic research and supplement amenities near Heungwon to provide facilities that Gyeonggi residents can easily use and enjoy.

On October 10, the opening day of Heungwon, Gyeonggi Province held a walking event on the Dulegil (a provincial trail network) with about 40 participants, including officials of Namyangju City and the Gyeonggi Cultural Foundation officials, as well as local residents of Hwado-eup.
