-Professor Hwang Woo-seok, Nobel Prize Winner Dr. Gunter Blobel, etc. –

Provincial Governor Sohn Hak-kyu of Gyeonggi-do invited Professor Hwang Woo-seok of Seoul National University, Nobel Prize Winner Dr. Gunter Blobel in Physiology and Medicine, and other internationally renowned scholars in the biology field to discuss common interests and corporative means for development of the bio industry in Korea. The meeting took place on the 7th floor of Marriot Hotel in Gangnam-gu of Seoul at 2pm on July 7, 2005.

Director Wolfe Nebas of Institut Pasteur Korea and Professor Ahn Gyu-ri, who is a core member of the research team lead by Hwang, also attended the meeting.

The meeting featured the potential for cooperative research works by bio R&D bodies such as the Bio Organs Facilities and Institut Pasteur Korea housed in and supported by Gyeonggi-do. The invitational talk was intended to strategically foster the bio industry as the growth engine for the next generation.

Participants agreed to the need for the cooperative industry-academy-research network through technology support and joint research to reach the goal of invigorating the bio industry in Korea.

The research team led by Professor Hwang Woo-seok of Seoul National University and Institut Pasteur Korea, in particular, decided to engage in negotiation to form a mutually beneficial relationship for joint research and cooperation.

First-stage completion of Gyeonggi-do Bio Center in early 2006 and World Bio Forum with internationally renowned scholars in the biology field are planned to strengthen and foster the industry.

Nobel Prize Winner Dr. Blobel who will soon join the Science Advisory Committee of Institut Pasteur Korea stated that he would give his full cooperation to make positive contribution to the bio industry in Korea.

The province plans to increase the administrative and financial support to develop the bio industry as a strategic tool that will generate added-value as it becomes the heart of food production in the future. (031-249-4637)
