Gyeonggi-do Institute of Heath and Environment so called KIHE has been carrying out the monitoring program to restrict the level of dioxin in the air and soil.

Gyeonggi’s implemented dioxin restriction program was firstly initiated in 2002 starting with only 3 regions, Suwon, Anyang, and Ansan, which now has been expanded to Seoungnam, Bucheon, and Siheooung, resulting 6 times of monitoring implementations every year for 6 regions. Province is slated to introduce this monitoring program into the other regions also; Total 10 regions of Gyeonggi are to be under this monitoring system by 2007.

For more accurate measure on the soil contamination, 30 spots of 10 regions will continuously be inspected every year for its level of dioxin-tainted.

Approximately 1,000 units of incinerator, which burns up more than 25kg of trash per hour, are under operation in Gyeonggi area and they are known to be the major causes of dioxin emission. Crowded with many industrial complexes and transportations belching out various pollutants have also became another grave concern to the local province.

Pollution control program implemented by other environmental mediums are too complicated and costly, failing to have a constant operation. However, the dioxin-monitoring program by KIHE is known to be the best organized, persistent, and enable system, which will contribute to reduce the level of dioxin and to protect the health for the local citizens.
