Gyeonggi-do, takes in North-South Koreas jointly cultivated Gyeonggi-Pyongyang Rice
The Gyeonggi government has announced on Mar. 5 that 2 tons of [Gyeonggi-Pongyang Rice], cultivated by both Gyeonggi and North Korea farmers was brought to Gyeonggi-do from the joint farm located in Danggok-ri, Gangnam-gun, Pongyang-si, North Korea on Mar. 2.
Soon after the 3 ha model rice farm operated in 2005, the provincial government has jointly cultivated over 512 tons of rice on joint rice farms of 100 ha (50 ha in South and 50 ha in North Korea) since last year.
Although all projects promoted by the government has been postponed after the North Korean nuclear tests last year Oct. 9, bringing in [Gyeonggi-Pongyang Rice] is the evidence of the trust between from farmers on both side of the Korean peninsula built up while the government has driven the South and North Korea Exchange Project.
This occasion is more valuable because residents of Danggok-ri has sent their precious rice as a gift of gratitude towards Gyeonggi-do’s support last year even through their hardships of lack of provisions and other afflictions caused by flood damage, nuclear tests and so on.
The Gyeonggi-do government plans to distribute the [Gyeonggi-Pongyang Rice] to displaced North Koreans living in the South, participants of rice-planting and rice reaping events and other necessary civil groups.
