Delivered lecture to biracial persons… “Should create a national identity that respects diversity”

Jeb Bush, former Governor of Florida and brother of George W. Bush, President of the United States, said on May 31st that “Korea can include biracial people, by accepting diversity while maintaining its unique traditions.”
Mr. Bush made a visit to the Pearl S. Buck Memorial Hall, located in Bucheon, Gyeonggi Province, and stated in his lecture “I learned from the newspaper that discrimination and grievances against biracial people are increasing in Korea, despite the fact that international marriages and multicultural families are on the increase.”
He added, “In the United States, some people regard immigrants as others rather than one of us,” and requested, “Korea will also have to change its national identity, as multicultural families are on the increase due to the low birth rate.”
Mr. Bush suggested two ways to create a society that respects diversity.
He proposed, “If a single ethnicity is excessively stressed, or if people try to create such an environment, you cannot create a multicultural or multiethnic society. Korea must create a national identity that respects diversity across various fields, including politics, religion, and culture.”
Also, Mr. Bush added, “There are some Americans who express their anger that immigrants do not speak English. It takes 2 to 3 generations to accept each other’s diversity, and to achieve harmony in a multicultural, multiethnic society.”
His visit to Pearl S. Buck Memorial Hall was made after he was invited by Mr. Ryu Jin, Chairman of Poongsan Group.
He stated his impression of the visit as, “Ms. Pearl Buck practiced love, deep enthusiasm, and charity. I am honored to visit the Memorial Hall that pays tribute to her achievements.”
Jeb Bush is known to have a special interest in multicultural families and immigration as his wife is also bi-racial, of Mexican descent.
Mr. Bush took a look around the Memorial Hall before his lecture, and posed for a picture with and received flowers from a biracial brother and sister, born between a Pakistani father and a Korean mother.
The ceremony to honor his visit was a great success, and was joined by 100 guests including Governor of Gyeonggi Province Kim Moon-soo, U.S. Ambassador to Korea Alexander Vershbow, Chief Executive of Pearl S. Buck International Janet L. Mintzer, Cha Myeong-jin (Grand National Party) and Ryu Jae-geon (Uri Party), members of the National Assembly, Mayor of Bucheon City Hong Gyeon-pyo, President of American Chamber of Commerce in Korea Tamy Overby, biracial singer In Soon Yi (Real Name: Kim In-soon), and the local community.
