On September 27th (local time), Cabot Microelectronics Corporation (CEO, William Noglows), a wafer abrasive manufacturer located in Aurora, Illinois, USA, signed an MOU with the Gyeonggi delegation in the company’s offices. The MOU pertains to the establishment of facilities to produce abrasives for the Chemical Mechanical Polishing (CPM) process in Gyeonggi Province, Republic of Korea.
Representatives of the Korea Trade-Investment Promotion Agency (KOTRA) had visited Cabot Microelectronics and publicized Gyeonggi’s superiority in location and its incentives for foreign companies since March of this year. Thanks to such efforts, the delegation succeeded in attracting the investment. Cabot Microelectronics is the global leader in the supply of inorganic compounds for the CMP process.
The company excels in the manufacture of ceria abrasives that are extensively used for highly-integrated semiconductor devices. It was separated from Cabot Chemical on 2000, and 25% of its employees are involved in development. Cabot has continuously been investing in research and development in order to develop new products.

With the signing of this MOU, manufacturing and research facilities of Cabot Microelectronics are slated for establishment in the Oseong Industrial Complex located in Pyeongtaek City, Gyeonggi Province. The proposed site, where CMP slurries and pads will be produced, will have an approximate area of 6,600 square meters.
The CMP material market has rapidly grown since 1994 in tandem with the development of the IT industry. Through this MOU, Cabot Microelectronics will be able to secure manufacturing facilities to ensure the stable supply of inorganic compounds for semiconductors made from new materials to its customers including Samsung Electronics and Hynix Semiconductor.
In particular, the cooperative development will make it possible to supply optimum ceria abrasives for CMP, and thus is expected to improve the yield and reliability of domestic nano-semiconductors.
At the signing ceremony, Governor Kim asked the company officials to improve Korea’s semiconductor industry by using their advanced technology and know-how, and he promised to provide full administrative assistance.
On the same day, Governor Kim met Virginia Governor Robert F. McDonnell in Fairfax. The heads of the two sister states discussed the exchange of information regarding business-friendly environments and policies, joint research and development, and the efficient use of harbors and physical distribution networks.
