Gyeonggi Province congratulates Pyeongchang for being selected as Host City of the Winter Olympics

A boost to the cooperative agreement signed on March 28, a good opportunity for local growth
Gyeonggi Province conveyed its sincere congratulations and support to Pyeongchang for its selection as the host city of the Winter Olympics.
Gyeonggi Province and Gangwon Province set to work together, having signed the Gyeonggi Province–Gangwon Province 2018 Pyeongchang Olympic Cooperation Agreement on March 28 at Alpensia Stadium.
Gyeonggi Province has actively promoted Pyeongchang’s efforts to host the Winter Olympics by posting promotions on its official website, GNews Plus, and other media outlets. Gyeonggi Province Governor Kim Moon-Soo visited the province’s sister region of British Colombia in Canada, met with provincial Premier Christy Clark and received a promised of unlimited support from the region that hosted the 21st Winter Olympics.
Gyeonggi Province and Gangwon Province signed four cooperative agreements between 2007 and 2011 with the aim of improving the border areas between the provinces, upgrading Hangang River water system management, and expanding the East-West traffic network.
Now that Pyeongchang has been selected to host the Winter Olympics, the northern part of Gyeonggi Province, where development was once limited because of its close proximity to North Korea and restrictions in the capital region, is expected to expand.
The northern part of Gyeonggi Province and the nearby Gangwon Province area will be further developed through this collaboration. The Second Yeongdong Expressway will open earlier than planned, along with the Yeoju-Wonju Double Track Railway and Wonju-Gangreung Double Track Railway. Business between the two regions looks set to enjoy a great boom.
Early opening of the Second Yeong-Dong Expressway
– Express section: Gwangju, Chowol, Sinpyeong, Gyeonggi – Wonju, Gahyeon (connected to Yeongdong Expressway)

*2nd Yeongdong Expressway: Chowol IC – Donggwangju IC – Hongcheon IC – Daesin IC – Dongyangpyeong IC – Seowonju JCT
– Shortens the journey by 15km (71.95 ¢®©¡ 56.95) and the travel time from 67 minutes to 40 minutes.
Early opening of the Yeoju-Wonju Double Track Subway
– Expressway section and business scale: Yeoju-Wonju, 21.9 km
– Total business cost: KRW 632.9 billion (estimate)
– Project period: 8 years (3 years on layout, 5 years on construction)

As Pyeongchang-gun of Gangwon Province has been selected as the next host of the Winter Olympics, Gyeonggi Province will support the region’s development as a Special Olympic Zone and will strive to attract more residents to Alpensia Resort, where the main games will be held. To enhance the festive spirit and expand the base for sports, the government will invest in training young athletes, launch summer camps, and promote other sports-related activities. During the Winter Olympics, the Gyeonggi Provincial Government will support cultural performances and implement safety-related measures.
