As the largest shopping complex in the metropolitan area, Hanam Union Square is finally revealing its outlines.

Tubman Company of the US, King Power of Hong Kong, and Shinsegae Co., Ltd. joined together at the the Westin Chosun Seoul Hotel on September 5th to celebrate the investment agreement and declare the launch of their mammoth project. Gyeonggi Province Governor Kim Moon-soo, National Assembly Member Moon Hak-jin, and over 100 Hanam residents were there to celebrate the signing of the agreement.

Shinsegae Co., Ltd. and King Power Group joined forces to establish Hanam Union Square Co., Ltd. for this project. The company will build a shopping complex covering 330 thousand square meters on a 1,107,000 square meter lot near the Misari Motorboat Racing Park of Shinjang-dong, Hanam City, with a whopping investment of KRW 800 billion. The complex is scheduled to open in 2015.

The complex will consists of department stores, fashion outlets, movie theatres, exhibition halls, performance halls, and other cultural facilities, and will provide full-time employment for over 7,000 people.

Gyeonggi Province played a major role in realizing the construction of the largest shopping complex in Hanam. The district’s development was crippled by overcrowding restrictions, development restrictions, and protected water sources. The local government had long fought for the easing of these unreasonable restrictions, thus making Hanam Union Square a reality.

Governor Kim was also keen to secure investors. When he visited China and the Philippines on the 5th of August, he met King Power Group Chairman Antares Cheng, and then met Heo In-cheol of Shinsegae Co., Ltd., and Hanam Mayor Lee Kyo-bum to sign investment agreements for Hanam Union Square.

With this as its foundation, Hanam Union Square Co., Ltd. finalized the land support agreement on the last day of August and announced the project schedule on the day of the celebration.

An official of Hanam Union Square Co., Ltd. declared, “Hanam Union Square is ten times larger than the Yeju Premium Outlet (33,500 square meters), and will offer a myriad activities to visitors, tourists and locals alike. It will attract over ten million people annually, and become a major center of shopping and culture.”

Governor Kim said at the event, “It will be a place where people can shop for quality products at reasonable prices. The location, right next to the scenic Han River, is also superb. I am confident that Hanam Union Square will become a popular destination for people from all around the world. Know that you have Gyeonggi Province’s full support in establishing this great venue.”

Hanam Union Square is to be built in Sinjang-dong, Misa-ri, which was protected as a ‘green belt zone’ for many years. However, Gyeonggi Province has labeled the area a ‘green zone without green’ as it has been overwhelmed by illegal outlets, and requested that the central government ease the unreasonable restrictions.
