“I will reside here¡ Where my heart is warm¡ My old stories and my loved ones¡ It embraces them all. I reside here¡”
These are the refrain words of Gyeonggi’s song “I Will Reside Here.” This ballad matches very well with the wild, bold voice of Korean native rocker Yoon Do-hyun. It was composed by Korea’s best musicians Kim Hyun-cheol and Gang Ho-jeong, and the lyrics were written by Sim Hyun-bo.
On November 1, 2011 Gyeonggi Province presented the results of the Gyeonggi Song-Making Project, which started in August. The objectives of this project were to increase the brand value of Gyeonggi Province and strengthen the unity among residents of Gyeonggi Province by making a provincial song in a popular song style that could symbolize Gyeonggi Province’s representative tangible and intangible cultural heritage, history, and nature.
Gyeonggi’s song, which was created after three months of long hard work, is a rock-ballad song entitled ‘I Will Reside Here.” The lyrics of this song metaphorically describe the yesterday and present day of Gyeonggi Province, which are at the center of its history, and it directly expresses the citizens’ thinking of being together with the province.
As we can tell from the lyrics, ‘Along the long Namhansanseong Fortress, Suwon Hwaseong Fortress paths as well, sunlight always shines’ and the lyrics, ‘Along the path of Gwangreung Arboretum, Namhangang riverside as well, trees are green’, the cultural heritage of Namhansanseong Fortress, Suwon Hwaseong Fortress, Gwangreung Arboretum, and Namhangang riverside are used as song materials.
According to the results of a survey on Gyeonggi Province citizens’ preference and awareness of Gyeonggi Province’s cultural content, which was conducted on August 24-27, these four sites were shown to be appropriate. From a story competition that was conducted on September 15-October 7, Namhansanseong Fortress (30%) and Suwon Hwaseong Fortress (24%) were predominantly chosen as appropriate song materials.
Based on such results, Gyeonggi’s song was created in October. An official of Gyeonggi Province said, “We hope to comfort the mind of Gyeonggi Province’s citizens and to unite people with this song”.
Gyeonggi Province is planning to distribute this song in various music formats such as tune MR and a bell sound via several portal sites and Gyeonggi Province’s homepage. The song will also be often used during various festivals and events.
In particular, to celebrate its creation and to popularize this song, Gyeonggi Province will hold an autumn concert for Gyeonggi people at the 2nd lobby of Suwon Subway Station on November 8 at 7pm. Singer Yoon Do-hyun will sing this song for the general public and the Gyeonggi Children Choir will sing it as an anchor performance.
Singers Kim Yeon-woo, who became very popular by MBC TV program called ‘I am a singer’, as well as singers Kim Jo-han and Kim Tae-woo, will perform in the concert as well. Attending the concert is absolutely free.
