This year Gyeonggi Province will provide a total of KRW450 million in official development assistance (ODA) funds for a total of nine projects in developing countries suffering from economic difficulties.

Gyeonggi Province received applications at the beginning of 2012, and announced the selected recipients; 17 projects including the construction of the Hope Library in Hellast Mongolia were announced on March 13.

The selected projects are: the construction of the Saemaul Library in Cambodia; the construction of public toilets in Kirtifur Park in Nepal; support of the construction of Goryeo people’s organic soybean processing plant in the Maritime Province of Siberia; free medical care and pharmaceutical support for the underprivileged in Talisay, Cebu, of the Philippines; the construction of a computer and foreign language center in Kyrgyzstan; the construction of the Hope Library in Hellast, Mongolia; the construction of a Korean language center in Uzbekistan; a pilot project for the expansion of agricultural income in Kampot, Cambodia; and on-site training of Indonesia’s female human resources.

In addition, Gyeonggi Province plans to operate education programs for government officials from Indonesia and Cambodia at the Gyeonggi Women’s Development Center and Gyeonggi Human Resources Development Center regarding the Saemaeul (‘New Village’) Movement and other national economic development strategies adopted by Korea in the past. Gyeonggi believes that human resource development is as important a task as developing infrastructure.

The Gyeonggi Human Resources Development Center will also invite a total of 60 government officials from Iraq, Afghanistan and Jordan at the request of KOICA, provide them with education about the economic development of Korea, and help them enhance their administrative competencies through both lectures and field trips.

An official in the International Affairs & Trade Division of Gyeonggi’s Economy & Investment Office said, “In order to live up to the provincial motto of ‘Global Inspiration,’ Gyeonggi Province will continue to expand its ODA projects and offer training services to government officials from the developing world.” “The province is also considering the establishment of an institution devoted to the development of human resources in developing countries along with the study of international relations.”

He added, “We will begin implementing our support programs at the end of March after examining the situations in the areas that will receive our aid.

The ODA projects are designed to promote humanitarianism, help developing countries achieve sustainable growth and improve bilateral relations between Korea and the recipient countries. Gyeonggi began participating in ODA projects in 2003 as part of a disaster relief program in a developing country, and has made the program an annual event since 2005.

In 2011, Gyeonggi provided KRW 486 million for nine projects in seven countries to support well digging and improve the quality of potable water on the outskirts of Ulan Bator in Mongolia, to construct irrigation and household water supply facilities in the Philippines, and to rebuild primary school classrooms in Battambang of Cambodia.
