The fourth Gyeonggi National Youth Gender Equality Film Festival, which will screen films produced and directed by young people under such themes as gender equality and women’s rights, is scheduled to begin at Gwanak Hall in the Anyang Art Center on August 14th at 2pm.

It is expected that young people from all over the country will participate in the film festival, which has been held annually in Gyeonggi Province since its inception in 2009. The festival was launched to promote awareness of the equality of the sexes and to provide a basis for talented young directors to grow into international directors.

The theme of this fourth festival is “Vibration and resonance in imagination and hope.” A total of six short films (each lasting approximately 20 minutes) about gender equality, women’s rights, and cooperation between men and women to create a harmonious world will be shown.

The films will be chosen via a screening competition. Submissions will be accepted between July 2nd and August 1st and divided into elementary, general (middle and high school), and special (college or university) categories. There is no restriction on the genre, and documentaries, dramas, and animations will be accepted.

Anyone interested in participating can visit http://www.gg.go.kr/ or the official Youth Gender Equality Film Festival blog at blog.naver.com/914707 and download an application form. Together with the completed application, submit a synopsis of the film (three A4 pages) and one copy of the film to be entered in DVD format to “Good Pictures” by mail (must be postmarked before the deadline: August 1st).

Applications should be addressed to:

Good Pictures has produced a number of TV movies, including Did We Love? which was aired on the cable channel Super Action in 2009 and The Reason We Can’t Date in 2011. It specializes in film production and planning and held the first Youth Gender Equality Film Festival in 2009.

The panel of judges will consist of a film critic, a women’s studies scholar, and a number of young people, and will be chaired by Jo Jae-hyeon, chairman of the Gyeonggi Film Commission. The applicants’ films will be judged on such criteria as expression of theme, originality of ideas, and completeness; the final six films that pass the first and second rounds of evaluation will be shown on August 14th, the day of the film festival. Each film will receive one of the following prizes: one grand prize (KRW 2,000,000); one runner-up prize (KRW 700,000); and four commendation prizes (KRW 500,000).

Gyeonggi Province will put all the winning films on Gyeonggi.net and produce and distribute a CD and promotional materials for the promotion of gender equality culture and its women’s development policy. Furthermore, it will strive to raise the profile of the Youth Gender Equality Film Festival as an internationally known film festival.

A Gyeonggi Provincial Government representative stated, “We will do our best to support the film festival so that it can expand beyond the boundaries of Northeast Asia and find its role as an international youth gender equality film festival so that talented young directors can be discovered and supported as they mature into world-class directors.”1088668620.jpg Images◇ Winners of last year’s Gyeonggi Youth Gender Equality Film Festival.
