The summer vacation period is here – but some of us seem to have forgotten all about it! After the drought that began this spring and the unusual temperatures that followed, summer never announced that it had arrived. There are also news reports about employees’ summer vacation time being cut due to the sluggish economy.

This year, it just doesn’t make sense to spend a wad of cash on some distant destination. Wouldn’t it be nice if there was a great place to go close by instead? Just in time for the summer vacation, Gyeonggi Province has announced a new online site for info on all of the province’s major campgrounds.

At the Gyeonggi Tourism Portal Site (http://www.ggtour.or.kr/), the Gyeonggi Tourism Organization (President Hwang Jun-ki) is introducing 100 of Gyeonggi Province’s campgrounds so that campers can get out and start pitching their tents. The campgrounds most worth visiting are included in the ten recommended family camping courses.

The website is very useful as it provides basic information, photos, and nearby tourist sites for 100 of Gyeonggi Province’s campgrounds. One advantage of the site is that it makes it easy for vacationers to put together a trip that combines camping with sightseeing. What’s more, the ten recommended family camping courses encourage so-called “friendly camping,” which incorporates shopping at traditional markets near the campground so that campers can support the local economy.

Take Paju, for example. On the first day campers can buy some hanu (Korean beef) at the Jeokseong Market Hanu Village in Paju and stop by the Sanmeoru Winery for a tour and a spot of wine tasting before retiring to the Sanmeoru Farm Campground (Jeokseong-myeon, Paju City) for an evening repast of hanu and sanmeoru (wild grape) wine. The schedule for the second day includes a visit to Imjingak Pyeonghoa-Nuri Park and Heyri Art Valley, and a lunch of Imjingang grilled eel before visitors head home.

Some outstanding campgrounds among the 100 sites listed are the Yangju Green Ville Campground, which allows you to bring along your dog, and the Yainsidae Campground in Bucheon, which has tents for rental. Clearly, you don’t have to be an experienced camper to have a good time at these sites.

“It was pretty difficult to find a site that had reliable information about camping, but the Gyeonggi Tourism Portal has sifted through all the camping information so you can browse the cream of the crop,” said a spokesperson for the Gyeonggi Tourism Organization. “This is going to be a great help for anyone who is planning a camping trip.”
