The Gyeonggi-Do Youth Center (Director Kim Hui-ja) will be offering creativity programs for families through the “Family Story” program this October.

The family program, which is intended for families with teenage children, features group activities and experiences designed to promote the constructive utilization of off-time by getting the participants to spend time bonding with their family members.

The sessions are held on weekends and are open to twenty families with children aged eight to 17. Families can choose between two programs: Program A (Ecology Story for Families), which involves making clayware and eco-orienteering; and Program B, which involves making clayware and learning how to make eco-friendly craft items.

Program A’s main theme consists of an “eco-friendly green experience” designed to help families understand the importance of family bonds. In the clayware classes the participants learn how to make picture frames and albums with mud collected from the mudflats. In the eco-orienteering sessions, families learn how to navigate their way over a given course using a map, a compass, and a smart phone while carrying out missions along the way.

Program B places greater emphasis on cherishing nature and saving energy. The clayware class is the same as that of program A, but instead of eco-orienteering, families learn how to make eco-friendly gadgets. They can opt to make solar-powered cars while learning about the energy-making process through new and renewable energy tools. The nature craft class teaches participants how to make wooden necklaces and wishing poles out of materials that can be found in the forest.

The event will run for eight weeks starting from the end of October. Although the programs are designed as one-day events, the period can be extended to two days upon request. Participants are chosen on a first-come, first-served basis and are charged a small fee. To register, please visit the center’s website at www.ggyc.kr and complete the application form.
